| Code | Meaning | Series | Who | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 502 | “Missing Config - Parameter Group” Alarm. Mobile Link: “A critical configuration parameter has not been set. Please contact a dealer.” | Next Generation | Technician | Help Center code tables |
| 504 | “Missing Config - Fuel Type” Alarm. Mobile Link: “A critical configuration parameter has not been set. Please contact a dealer.” | Next Generation | Technician | Help Center code tables |
| 505 | “Invalid Serial Number” Alarm. Mobile Link: “A critical configuration parameter has not been set. Please contact a dealer.” The Power Zone 410 controller of liquid-cooled XG models uses 505 for a different alarm, Missing Config - Governor (Power Zone 410 Controller Owner's Manual, p. 29). | Next Generation | Technician | Help Center code tables |
| 1000–1006 | “Controller Fault” Alarm. Mobile Link: “The generator has experienced an internal alarm on the controller. Please contact a dealer.” Generac's Guardian table lists Controller Fault without a number. | Next Generation | Technician | Help Center code tables |
| 1100 | “Overcrank” What to check Guardian table: 1100 and 1101; Next Generation table: 1100. Owner's manuals: OVERCRANK, the engine did not start after five cranking cycles. Remedy: check that the fuel line shutoff valve is ON, clear the alarm, start in MANUAL; if it does not start or runs rough, contact an IASD (Guardian 10–26 kW Owner's Manual, pp. 20, 34; Next Generation 10–28 kW Owner's Manual, pp. 24, 37). | Guardian, Next Generation | Owner checks, then technician | Help Center code tables; Help Center 1100 article; Guardian 10–26 kW manual p. 34; Next Generation manual p. 37 |

| 1300 | “Low Oil Pressure” What to check Owner's manual remedy: check the oil level and add oil; if the level is correct, contact an IASD (Guardian 10–26 kW Owner's Manual, p. 34). Generac's documents disagree about restarting after adding oil: the 1300 article says to clear the alarm and reset, while the article on test runs after an error says not to run the generator if the error is related to oil pressure and to contact an IASD. If unsure, do not run it. Generac's 1300 article covers air-cooled generators without naming a series. The Next Generation manual has the same LOW OIL PRESSURE row (Next Generation 10–28 kW Owner's Manual, p. 37), but Generac's Next Generation table lists engine oil pressure as 3301–3304. | Guardian | Owner checks, then technician | Help Center code tables; Help Center 1300 article; Guardian 10–26 kW manual p. 34 |
| 1400 | “High Temperature” What to check Generac's article covers 1400–1401 on air-cooled generators. Owner's manual remedy: inspect the ventilation around the generator, intake, exhaust and rear; if nothing blocks it, contact an IASD (Guardian 10–26 kW Owner's Manual, p. 34). The Next Generation manual has the same row (Next Generation 10–28 kW Owner's Manual, p. 37); Generac's Next Generation table has no High Temperature code. | Guardian | Owner checks, then technician | Help Center code tables; Help Center 1400 article; Guardian 10–26 kW manual p. 34 |

How to read a Generac code
Where the code appears depends on the controller.
- Guardian units with the Evolution controller have an LCD under the enclosure lid. The home screen shows the highest-priority active alarm or warning and flashes the backlight; if several are active, only the first is shown Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 16. The alarm log keeps the last 50 alarms with date and time, and the error code and the alarm name alternate every 5 seconds Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 18.
- Next Generation units (Power Zone 200 controller) have no display. The message and the numeric code appear in the Mobile Link app (Generac Help Center, “Generac Home Standby Error Codes: Red/Yellow Light Meanings, Mobile Link Messages & Fixes”, Sep 14, 2026).
- The PowerPact 7.5 kW has no LCD, only LEDs for alarms, warnings and maintenance PowerPact manual, p. 14, so it has no numbered codes in the table.
- Liquid-cooled XG models use the Power Zone 410 controller, which has its own E-code table Power Zone 410 manual, pp. 29–40. Some numbers there mean something different, so that table is not mixed in here.
The owner’s manuals print alarm names such as OVERCRANK or LOW OIL PRESSURE with a remedy, but no numbers. The exception is SHUTDOWN SWITCH (2800) and (2801) in the Next Generation manual Next Generation manual, p. 38. The numbers in the table come from Generac’s Help Center tables in “What Error Codes Do I Need to Call a Dealer For?” (Sep 21, 2026), and a series is listed only where Generac’s table or code article names it. If your number is not listed, Generac’s index article suggests trying the article for a code with the same first two digits, which generally applies to its variants such as 1501 and 1505. A number followed by (H), such as 4512 (H), is hours of protection, not an error (Generac Help Center, “What does the numeric error with an (H) mean?”, Sep 24, 2025).
The status LEDs differ by series. On Guardian units the red LED lights when the generator is OFF or a fault is detected, yellow when maintenance is required, and green when utility power is present and the unit is in AUTO Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 14. On Next Generation units red is steady in OFF and flashes once a second for a fault, yellow flashes for a warning or maintenance, and blue means SERVICE mode Next Generation manual, p. 20. A red light can mean the generator is simply OFF (Generac Help Center, “What is the difference between maintenance reminders, warnings, and alarms?”, Jan 30, 2026). An alarm shuts the generator down; a warning does not Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 10.
The model and serial numbers are on a label on the inside partition, left of the control panel. Generac asks for both when you contact a dealer (Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. ii).
Clearing a code
Follow the manual for your series. Generac’s documents do not all agree.
- Guardian, Evolution manuals from 2019 to 2023: press OFF, then ENTER, then AUTO Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 34; Guardian 10–22 kW manual, p. 37.
- Guardian, 2016 manuals: the 9–22 kW manual says OFF, ENTER, then AUTO 2016 Guardian 9–22 kW manual, p. 32. The 8–22 kW manual’s table says ENTER twice, then AUTO 2016 Guardian 8–22 kW manual, p. 25, while page 11 of the same manual says OFF, then ENTER.
- Several Help Center code articles, such as the 1300 article, give “OFF, ENTER twice, then AUTO” for Evolution controllers.
- Next Generation: hold OFF for at least 3 seconds; the red LED turns steady when the alarm clears Next Generation manual, p. 37. Then press AUTO (Generac Help Center, “How Do I Clear an Error or Alarm Code On My Home Standby Generator?”, Feb 19, 2026).
- PowerPact: press OFF twice, then AUTO PowerPact manual, p. 29.
- Nexus, used on air-cooled units from about 2010 to 2013 (Generac Help Center, “What control panels do Generac’s standby generators use?”, Mar 2, 2026): set the switch to OFF and press ENTER Nexus manual, p. 21. Generac’s clearing article says ENTER twice.
Clearing does not fix the cause. The PowerPact manual says it only turns off the LED and the problem must be found and corrected PowerPact manual, p. 15. The Guardian, Next Generation and PowerPact manuals all say to contact an IASD (Independent Authorized Service Dealer, Generac’s term for its dealers) if the alarm comes back.
Never start the generator under load. Generac’s test after clearing an error: set the generator’s main line circuit breaker (MLCB) to OFF, start in MANUAL, watch for 3–5 minutes, then press OFF, set the MLCB to ON and press AUTO. The same article says not to run the generator at all if the error relates to oil pressure, oil temperature or engine coolant (Generac Help Center, “How do I test my generator in manual mode after clearing an error?”, Jun 4, 2026).
Some Help Center articles mention a “hard reset”. Generac’s procedure removes the controller fuse and the side panel, disconnects the battery and switches off the home’s service disconnect (Generac Help Center, “How Do I Perform a Hard Reset on a Home Standby System?”, Mar 2, 2026). These pages do not give it as an owner step.
What an owner can do
The manuals’ alarm tables give owners these steps: check and top up the oil, check that the fuel shutoff valve is ON, set the emergency shutdown switches to CLOSED (I), remove household loads, inspect the ventilation around the unit, and check battery condition in the controller menu or the app Guardian 10–26 kW manual, pp. 34–35; Next Generation manual, pp. 37–38. Generac recommends that an IASD do all maintenance Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 22, and all panels must be in place whenever the generator runs Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 15.
If you smell gas
The owner’s manuals have no section on what to do if you smell gas. Generac’s Help Center article “What should I do if I detect a gas leak?” (Jul 27, 2026) says:
IMPORTANT: If there is a strong gas odor, an active fuel leak, a hissing sound near a gas line, fire, smoke, or any immediate danger, leave the area and call 911 or local emergency services. For a suspected natural gas or LP fuel leak, contact the local gas utility or propane supplier after moving to a safe location.
It adds that you should shut the generator down only if you can reach it without walking through fuel, standing in a strong gas odor, touching leaking parts or creating a spark; otherwise leave and call emergency services or the fuel provider. For home standby generators it lists:
- If it is safe to approach the generator, set the generator controller to OFF.
- Do not open panels, remove fuel-system parts, tighten fittings, or attempt to repair the fuel system.
- If the odor appears to be natural gas or LP fuel, leave the area and contact the local gas utility or LP fuel provider from a safe location.
The same article says to keep flames and sparks away, not to look for a leak with a flame, and not to restart the generator until an IASD or a qualified gas professional has inspected it.
When to stop and call a professional
Generac’s code articles say only an IASD can submit warranty claims and do warranty repairs (Generac Help Center, “What Does It Mean When My Generator Displays an alarm: RPM Sensor Loss, error codes 1500-1521?”, Oct 17, 2025).
- The code comes back after you clear it.
- Fuel. The manual says no leakage of fuel is permitted and that the fuel source must be connected by a qualified professional technician or contractor Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 3. Generac’s code articles, the RPM Sensor Loss article among them, say fuel pressure checks must be done by a professional.
- Wiring and the transfer switch. Only a trained and licensed electrician should do wiring and connections to the unit Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 2. Generac says the T1 fuse in the transfer switch is always live with 120 V, even when the generator is not running, and does not recommend that untrained owners service fuses in transfer switches (Generac Help Center, “What does it mean when my generator displays an alarm: Charger Warning, Error Code 2770”, Jul 16, 2026).
- Carbon monoxide. Move to fresh air and get medical attention if you feel sick, dizzy or weak while the generator is running or after it stops Guardian 10–26 kW installation guidelines, p. 13. The owner’s manual calls for a battery-operated CO alarm indoors Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 3.
- Flooding. Do not start a generator that has been under water; have an IASD clean, dry and inspect it Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 30.
