How to read a Rheem or Ruud furnace code
These pages cover the gas furnaces in the Rheem installation instructions that Rheem’s support site lists with dates from April 2013 to July 2018: the condensing 92P, 92T, 95P, 95T, 96P, 96T, 96V, 97V and 98V series, and the 801S, 801P, 801T, 802P and 802V series. They also cover the green LED blink codes in the installation instructions for the RGPN, RGPS, RGLN and RGLS series 92-24161-38-12, p. 39, and the fault code label that Rheem lists on its RGGE and RGJF support pages; the label itself prints no models (92-103343-01-00).
The 2013–2018 manuals describe a 7-segment diagnostic display on the furnace control 92-24161-144-09, p. 39; 92-24161-124-12, p. 92. In standby with no fault present it reads 0. During a call from the thermostat it shows a letter for the mode: C for cooling or heat-pump heat, F for continuous fan, H for gas heat 92-24161-144-09, p. 39. Two-stage furnaces use H for high gas heat and a lower-case h for low gas heat 92-24161-122-12, p. 88. The communicating furnaces with an ECM blower (96V, 97V, 98V, 802V) add HP and hP for heat-pump heating, dF for defrost, and Cd and cd for cooling with dehumidification; on them the lower-case letter is the low stage and the capital the high stage 92-24161-124-12, p. 111. These letters are normal operation, not faults.
A fault is a two-digit number. On the boards without communication (the single-stage furnaces and the two-stage 96P, 96T and 802P) one digit is shown at a time: the first digit for one second, the second digit for one second, then a ½-second pause, repeating until the fault clears. Each fault is shown at least twice, even if it clears sooner 92-24161-144-09, p. 39; 92-24161-111-17, p. 87. Code 57 therefore reads as 5, then 7, then a pause. The communicating furnaces have a dual seven-segment display. There a fault code flashes, one second on and ½ second off, while a mode letter stays on steady 92-24161-124-12, pp. 92–93.
The communicating manuals warn that if a fault code or mode code is not in their lists, the display may be upside down 92-24161-124-12, p. 111. On communicating systems the thermostat also has an active fault screen. Some faults reach it at once but are shown to the homeowner only after repeats: failed ignition, 11, only after it occurs three times in one call for heat 92-24161-124-12, p. 113.
The display is part of the integrated furnace control. The documents used here do not say whether it can be read with the furnace doors in place. Rheem’s owner’s manuals do not mention it, and they say to turn off electrical power to the furnace before removing the front access door 92-20802-128-03, p. 7; 92-20802-130-02, p. 7.
Priority and codes that take turns
Usually the display shows one code. When several faults are present the control shows the one with the higher priority, and a lower priority number wins: in the 96T table a priority 2 fault, unexpected flame, is shown over a priority 3 fault, MRLC open 92-24161-157-00, p. 88. The 96P table gives 93 priority 1 and standby, 0, priority 24, the last place 92-24161-122-12, p. 88. The diagnostics charts for the 96V and the 97V use the same rule and put 30, open fuse, at priority 0 (96V-chart; 97V-chart). Faults that are not on the display are still logged in the fault buffer 92-24161-124-12, p. 92.
Some pairs are shown in turn: the first code, the top segment lit for ½ second, the second code, the top segment again 92-24161-144-09, p. 39. The single-stage 801T manual lists these pairs 92-24161-144-09, p. 39:
- 10 and 11: one-hour lockout after four failed ignitions in a row.
- 10 and 13: one-hour lockout after the flame is lost five times in a row.
- 14 and 10: one-hour lockout after an unexpected flame.
- 61 and 10: one-hour lockout after the control declared a dead blower because the main limit had been open more than 150 seconds.
- 61 and 22: the main limit has been open more than 150 seconds during a call for heat and has not closed again.
The communicating manuals add 45 and 57 (both pressure switches open when both should be closed), 44 and 55 (both closed when both should be open), 59 and 10, 93 and 10, and a mode letter, h or H, alternating with a fault that lets gas heat continue, such as 57, 12 or 66 92-24161-124-12, p. 93. The first editions of the two-stage 96P and 96T manuals name the open-switch pair 46 and 57 instead 92-24161-122-01, p. 88; 92-24161-157-00, p. 88.
Blink codes and the flame LED
The installation instructions for the RGPN, RGPS, RGLN and RGLS series print blink codes for a green LED in the legend of their troubleshooting chart, under “BLINK CODES (GREEN LED)” 92-24161-38-12, p. 39. The 2005 edition, for the (-)GPN, (-)GPP and (-)GLN series, has the same legend 92-24161-38-05, p. 37. Separately, an undated Rheem support article, TP0002 “Standard Furnace Diagnostic Flash Codes”, lists five counts in its own words. It names no models and no LED color, and says: “Does not include Modulating, LXE, or Two Stage furnaces.” (TP0002)
| Blinks | RGPN/RGPS/RGLN/RGLS legend (green LED) | TP0002 (models not named) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | “Soft lockout” | “Soft Lockout (1 hour)” |
| 2 | “PS Circuit open” | “Pressure Switch Failure (remains open)” |
| 3 | “Limit circuit open” | “Limit Switch Open” |
| 4 | “PS Circuit closed” | “Pressure Switch Failure (remains closed)” |
| 5 | “Twin Fault (Optional)” | “Twinning Circuit Failure”, only on boards with twinning |
TP0002 adds that Rheem’s National Service Department has found the 5 Blink code can occur in some cases if an electronic thermostat is used (TP0002). None of these documents matches a blink count to a two-digit display code.
The RGPN, RGPS, RGLN and RGLS legend also has an amber flame LED: off means no flame present, a rapid blink unexpected flame, a slow blink marginal flame sense, and steady on normal flame sense 92-24161-38-12, p. 39. The table on this page lists these states as Flame LED off, Flame LED rapid blink, Flame LED slow blink and Flame LED steady on. The 95P and 801T manuals describe a yellow or amber flame LED on their 7-segment boards: steady on with normal flame, one to four flashes per second when the flame is weak, rapid flashing with an unexpected flame, off with no flame 92-24161-111-17, p. 97; 92-24161-144-09, p. 42.
None of the Rheem and Ruud documents used for these pages describes a red or blue furnace light.
Why a code number needs the series
Rheem’s tables are tied to the series named on each document’s cover, and the same number is worded differently from one board to the next. Five examples, from the code lists of the 95P and 96P and the fault cards of the 96V and the 801T Ultra Low NOx 92-24161-111-17, p. 87; 92-24161-122-12, p. 88; 92-24161-124-12, pp. 115–119; 92-24161-164-01, pp. 35–39:
| Code | Single-stage 95P | Two-stage 96P | Communicating 96V | 801T Ultra Low NOx |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 22 | “MAIN LIMIT OPEN” | “MAIN LIMIT OPEN” | “MAIN LIMIT OPEN” | “MAIN LIMIT OPEN/AUXILIARY LIMIT OPEN” |
| 55 | “PRESSURE SWITCH STUCK CLOSED WHEN SHOULD BE OPEN” | “HIGH PRESSURE SWITCH CLOSED” | “HIGH PRESSURE SWITCH CLOSED, INDUCER OFF” | “COMBUSTION PRESSURE SWITCH CLOSED WHEN SHOULD BE OPEN” |
| 57 | “PRESS SWITCH STUCK OPEN WHEN SHOULD BE CLOSED” | “HIGH PRESSURE SWITCH OPEN” | “HIGH PRESSURE SWITCH OPEN, INDUCER ON HIGH SPEED” | “COMBUSTION PRESSURE SWITCH OPEN WHEN SHOULD BE CLOSED” |
| 58 | “WATER SENSE CIRCUIT OPEN” | “DRAIN CIRCUIT OPEN” | “WATER CIRCUIT OPEN” | “WATER SENSOR JUMPER NOT ATTACHED” |
| 61 | “BLOWER FAULT – BLOWER UNABLE TO RUN” | “BLOWER FAULT – BLOWER UNABLE TO RUN” | “BLOWER FAULT - MOTOR CANNOT RUN” | “BLOWER FAULT - DEAD BLOWER” |
The 801T Ultra Low NOx titles were read from the page images; the text of those cards could not be extracted, so these pages quote only their titles. On the 801S, 801P and 801T lists, 22 is “MAIN LIMIT OR HALC OPEN” 92-24161-144-09, p. 39, while the communicating furnaces give HALC its own code, 23 92-24161-124-12, p. 115. Two-stage and communicating furnaces also have separate low pressure switch codes, 44, 45 and 46 92-24161-122-12, p. 88.
One manual can word a code two ways. The 95P list calls 57 “PRESS SWITCH STUCK OPEN WHEN SHOULD BE CLOSED” and its fault card calls it “PRESSURE SWITCH OPEN” 92-24161-111-17, pp. 87, 92. Revisions differ too: the code lists in the first editions of the 96P and 96T manuals have no 93, and the 2017 revisions add “93 INTERNAL FAULT” 92-24161-122-01, p. 88; 92-24161-122-12, p. 88. None of the documents says which revision belongs to a given furnace, so each row on these pages names its document and page.
For current Endeavor furnaces, Rheem’s public product pages carry specification sheets but no installation instructions or service manual. The sheets describe the diagnostics as a 7-segment LED on some models, for example the R801T G11-662 Rev 7, p. 3, and as the Rheem Contractor and EcoNet apps on others, for example the R802V G11-668 Rev 4, p. 3. No document used here says whether these code tables apply to a furnace built after the 2018 manuals.
To find your rows, match your furnace’s model to a series name in the table. The covers write the series with a (-) or (-)(-) in front, such as “(-)95P SERIES, (-)(-)95MSP SERIES”, and do not explain the prefix 92-24161-111-17, p. 1. If your series is not in the table, these pages cannot tell you what your code means.
Rheem and Ruud
Rheem publishes these manuals on its Product Technical Support site (my.rheem.com/pts, with the files on pts.rheem.com). The same pages are served at my.ruud.com/pts; six pages compared on October 20, 2026 were identical. There are no separate Ruud furnace manuals among them. In the 802P manuals of December 2014 the word Ruud appears only in the parts line “Please visit www.myrheem.com/myruud.com for replacement parts information.” 92-24161-146-05, p. 50; 92-24161-147-04, p. 46. The 2017 revision of the 801T manual says “Homeowners please visit www.rheem.com for product information.” 92-24161-144-09, p. 49.
For current furnaces, the same model name R801T appears on both a Ruud specification sheet (G22-556 Rev 8) and a Rheem one (G11-662 Rev 7), and Rheem and Ruud sheets share form numbers with G11 and G22 prefixes, such as G11-666 Rev 6 and G22-666 Rev 6. The documents do not say whether a particular Ruud furnace has the same control board as a series in these manuals. These pages read a code only through the series named on a manual’s cover.
What the owner’s manual tells you to do
Rheem has two owner’s manuals for these furnaces: the User’s Information Manual for condensing gas furnaces, 92-20802-128-03, which Rheem’s support site links from the Use and Care pages of the 92P, 92T, 95P, 95T, 96P, 96T, 96V, 97V and 98V, and the one for 80% gas furnaces, 92-20802-130-02, linked from the 801TA, 801PA, 802VA, 802PA and R801TMUA pages. Neither has a code list, a reset procedure or a list of models. Where they cover the same subject, the passages used on these pages read the same and sit on the same page.
What they give the owner:
- On the thermostat, HEAT turns heating on when the temperature drops below the desired temperature, AUTO turns heating or cooling on as needed to hold it, OFF turns heating and cooling off, and FAN-ON runs the blower continuously 92-20802-128-03, p. 4; 92-20802-130-02, p. 4. Do not let heat from a television, lamps or radios influence the thermostat 92-20802-128-03, p. 4.
- Arrange furniture and drapes so the supply air registers and return air grilles are unobstructed 92-20802-128-03, p. 4, and do not block air openings on the furnace or those supplying the area where it is installed 92-20802-128-03, p. 2.
- Keep the air filters clean, inspect them monthly and replace them if necessary. Have your installer, service agency or gas supplier show you how to reach them, and put the filter rack door back properly afterward 92-20802-128-03, p. 7; 92-20802-130-02, p. 7. The warnings on that page say to disconnect main electrical power to the unit before any maintenance and to turn off electrical power to the furnace before removing the front access door.
- On condensing furnaces a pressure switch shuts off the main burners if the condensate drain line becomes blocked, and the condensate flow can be checked by eye while the furnace runs 92-20802-128-03, p. 8. The 80% manual has no condensate section.
- If the vent pipe has become disconnected, toxic fumes can escape into the home; the manuals say not to operate the furnace and that appropriate service must be applied 92-20802-128-03, p. 8; 92-20802-130-02, p. 8.
The rest belongs to others. Routine maintenance is to be provided by a qualified installer, service agency or the gas supplier only, and an annual inspection by one of them is recommended 92-20802-128-03, p. 7. If the furnace will not operate, the last of the manual’s operating instructions is to turn off its gas and call your service technician or gas supplier 92-20802-128-03, p. 4.
Shutting the furnace down
Both owner’s manuals give the same steps under “To Turn Off Gas To The Appliance” 92-20802-128-03, p. 4; 92-20802-130-02, p. 4. They begin: shut off the manual gas valve located in the gas supply piping outside the furnace casing. Then:
- Set the thermostat to the lowest setting.
- Turn off all electric power to the appliance if service is to be performed.
- Remove the burner access door.
- Turn the gas control knob, or set the gas control switch, to OFF.
- Replace the burner access door.
Step 2 is conditional in this list. The manuals’ warning is to turn off electrical power to the furnace before removing the front access door 92-20802-128-03, p. 7, and their operating instructions turn off all electric power to the appliance before the burner access door is removed 92-20802-128-03, p. 4. They also point to the label on the furnace: its safety information, operating instructions and instructions to turn off gas have specific information about that furnace and its gas controls 92-20802-128-03, p. 4. If the furnace overheats or the gas valve fails to shut off the gas supply, turn off the manual gas valve to the furnace before turning off the electrical supply 92-20802-128-03, p. 1.
Clearing a code
The owner’s manuals have no reset step. The rules below come from the installation instructions, which Rheem writes “as an aid to qualified service personnel” 92-24161-144-09, p. 1. They describe how the boards behave; they are not owner steps.
On the 7-segment boards 92-24161-144-09, p. 40; 92-24161-111-17, p. 95; 92-24161-124-12, p. 121:
- Any lockout can be cleared at once if the fault that caused it has been cleared and the power to the unit is turned off and back on, or, for a soft lockout only, if the call for heat is off for more than 2 and less than 20 seconds.
- A five-minute soft lockout follows when the low pressure switch (so worded in all three manuals) has not closed after 60 seconds of inducer operation at the start of a heat cycle. It resets itself after five minutes. The 57 and 45 fault cards of the 95P and 96V manuals describe the same start-up case differently, as five minutes of inducer operation followed by a new attempt, and do not mention a lockout 92-24161-111-17, p. 92; 92-24161-124-12, p. 117.
- A one-hour soft lockout follows four failed ignitions, five flame losses in one call for heat, an unexpected flame, a dead blower, or unexpected voltage on the gas valve circuit that goes away when the inducer stops. The display alternates 10 with the code of the cause, and the lockout resets itself after one hour. The condensing manuals add a water sensed condition that returns within 5 minutes in the same call for heat.
- A hard lockout comes with 93, for an internal fault or a welded gas valve relay, and cycling the call for heat does not reset it. It also comes with 61 after a dead blower has been declared four times in one call for heat; that one can be reset by cycling the call for heat. The 61 fault cards word this differently, as a hard lockout requiring repair of the blower or motor and a manual reset of power to the furnace 92-24161-111-17, p. 94; 92-24161-124-12, p. 119; see the 61 page.
- During any lockout the control starts no heat cycle. It generally still answers a cooling or fan call, but shows the lockout code instead of C or F.
For blink codes the documents give other times. Rheem’s FAQ, which names no models, says a 1 Blink soft lockout is reset by turning off the 115 volt power supply to the furnace, or the thermostat, for 5 to 10 seconds (Rheem support article “Gas Furnace Technical Frequently Asked Questions”, undated). The RGPN, RGPS, RGLN and RGLS instructions say the one-hour lockout after four failed ignitions can be reset by shutting off main power to the furnace for five seconds or by turning the heat call off and back on 92-24161-38-12, p. 30.
A reset does not remove the cause: the installation instructions clear a lockout only if the original fault has been cleared 92-24161-144-09, p. 40.
The 7-segment boards also keep a fault memory. On the 95P and 801T, at each power reset the board flashes the three most recent faults less than one week old, newest first, “as a diagnostic aid to the field technician” 92-24161-111-17, p. 97; 92-24161-144-09, p. 42, so the display can show old faults right after the power comes back. The 96V board stores up to six faults and displays the six most recent ones from the past week when fault recall is activated 92-24161-124-12, p. 95. The fault code label 92-103343-01-00 says fault code history is displayed at power up, most recent fault first 92-103343-01-00, p. 1. Viewing and erasing the memory is done with switches and a pushbutton on the control board; these pages do not describe it.
When to stop and call a professional
The owner’s manuals say installation and service must be performed by a qualified installer, service agency or the gas supplier, and that in Massachusetts installation must be performed by a licensed plumber or gas fitter (printed “gas filter”) 92-20802-128-03, p. 1. Stop and call when:
- You smell gas. The steps from the cover of the owner’s manual are at the top of every code page 92-20802-128-03, p. 1.
- The furnace overheats or the gas valve does not shut off the gas. Turn off the manual gas valve to the furnace before the electrical supply 92-20802-128-03, p. 1.
- Any part of the furnace has been under water. Do not use it; a qualified service agency should inspect it and replace all gas controls, control system parts and electrical parts that have been wet 92-20802-128-03, p. 2; 92-20802-130-02, p. 2.
- The vent pipe has become disconnected. Do not operate the furnace; appropriate service must be applied 92-20802-128-03, p. 8.
- The furnace will not operate. Shut it down by the steps above and call your service technician or gas supplier 92-20802-128-03, p. 4.
- The work goes past the filter. Routine maintenance is for a qualified installer, service agency or the gas supplier only 92-20802-128-03, p. 7.
Carbon monoxide: the manual’s rule about doors and covers is at the top of every code page 92-20802-128-03, p. 1. The manual also recommends U.L. and/or C.S.A. recognized fuel gas and CO detectors 92-20802-128-03, p. 1, and it cites the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommendation that every home have at least one carbon monoxide alarm in the hallway near the bedrooms in each separate sleeping area 92-20802-128-03, p. 3.
