“SHUTDOWN SWITCH”
What it means
The generator was stopped by an emergency shutdown switch and will not start until the switch is back in the CLOSED (I) position and the alarm is cleared Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 35. The Next Generation manual says the generator will not start while its emergency shutdown switch is active, and that holding OFF for three seconds clears the condition Next Generation manual, p. 21. Every unit has an external switch for shutting it down; the manual says it meets the latest NEC requirement Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 15. The status LED flashes red Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 35.
Generac’s article says the code comes from the emergency stop button or, more often, the auxiliary shutdown switch, and that on Guardian units the switch can be tripped by accident: someone brushes against it, it is not reset after maintenance, or an animal such as a squirrel flips it (Generac Help Center, “What Does It Mean When My Generator Displays an Error Code: Auxiliary Shutdown, Error Code 2800?”, Aug 29, 2025).
The switch is not an everyday off button. Both manuals warn that using it to power the unit down under normal circumstances will damage the equipment Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 15; Next Generation manual, p. 20.
Check these first
If a dealer has been working on the generator, ask them before you reset anything. Generac’s 2800 article notes that service providers sometimes trip these switches on purpose so that a generator waiting for service cannot run.
- Find the outside switch. On Guardian units it is on the back panel Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 15; on Next Generation units it is on the side panel Next Generation manual, p. 20. The 2800 article describes it as a small black rubber-coated toggle with I (closed) at the top and O (open) at the bottom.
- On a Guardian unit, look for a second switch. The component drawings in the 2023 manual show one switch on the 10 kW unit and two on the 14–26 kW units Guardian 10–26 kW manual, pp. 5–7. The Guardian 9–22 kW Owner’s Manual, 2021 puts the second switch inside the generator on 16–22 kW models p. 17. The 2800 article places it inside the housing, on the firewall panel, on two-cylinder models.
- On a Next Generation unit, check whether a second, remote switch was installed. The 2800 article says one is added near the transfer switch only where local code requires it, and that it shows as 2801.
- Set every switch to I (CLOSED). The Guardian manual says this for all its switches Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 35. The Next Generation manual prints it in the 2801 row, for the remote switch Next Generation manual, p. 38, and the 2800 article tells Next Generation owners to confirm that a secondary switch is also at I.
- Clear the alarm. Guardian, manuals from 2019 to 2023: press OFF, then ENTER, then AUTO Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 34; Guardian 9–22 kW Owner’s Manual, 2021, p. 17. Next Generation: hold OFF for 3 seconds Next Generation manual, p. 38, then press AUTO (2800 article).
When to call a licensed technician
- The code does not clear after every switch is at I, or it keeps coming back when nobody touched a switch. Generac’s 2800 article says this can mean a wire-connection problem and strongly recommends an IASD (Independent Authorized Service Dealer).
- Any wiring at the generator or at a remote switch. Only a trained and licensed electrician should do wiring and connections to the unit Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 2. On Next Generation units, miswired sensing wires to a remote emergency shutdown switch show as a Wiring Error in the 2094–2099 range (Generac Help Center, “What Error Codes Do I Need to Call a Dealer For?”, Sep 21, 2026).
Notes for different models
- Next Generation manuals print two rows: SHUTDOWN SWITCH (2800) for the switch on the unit and SHUTDOWN SWITCH (2801) for a remote switch. For 2801 the fix adds setting the switch to CLOSED (I) before holding OFF for 3 seconds Next Generation manual, p. 38; Next Generation 20 kW Three-Phase Owner’s Manual, p. 35.
- Guardian manuals from 2019 to 2022 call this alarm AUXILIARY SHUTDOWN, with a red LED Guardian 10–24 kW Owner’s Manual, p. 38. The 2023 manual calls it SHUTDOWN SWITCH, with a flashing red LED Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 35.
- The PowerPact manual lists an open emergency shutdown switch under its HIGH TEMPERATURE row, for a unit that will not start; the fix is to set the switch to CLOSED (I) PowerPact 7.5 kW Owner’s Manual, p. 29.
