How to read a Daikin code
Daikin’s manuals for these wall units do not use blink counts. The OPERATION lamp on the indoor unit blinks to tell you there is a fault, and you read the code itself on the remote controller’s temperature display FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, pp. 5, 49. The button depends on the remote:
- FTXM-WVJU9, FTXQ-ASBU9 and FTX/FTXN-NMVJU: the page with the procedure draws the button with the label CANCEL; the remote’s parts list in the same manuals calls it the TIMER CANCEL button FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 8; FTXQ-ASBU9 Operation Manual, p. 7; FTX/FTXN-NMVJU Operation Manual, p. 9. Hold it for about 5 seconds until 00 blinks in the temperature display, then press it again and again; each press shows the next code. In the FTXM and FTXQ manuals a beep means the code on the screen is not the unit’s error and a long beep means it is the corresponding error code; point the remote at the indoor unit while you press FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 49; FTXQ-ASBU9 Operation Manual, p. 27. The FTX/FTXN-NMVJU manual says to press until a continuous beep and calls the other beeps short FTX/FTXN-NMVJU Operation Manual, p. 30.
- FTXS30/36 with the ARC452A remote: the button is TIMER CANCEL, held for 5 seconds; a short beep and two beeps in a row mean the code on the screen is not the unit’s error, and a long beep means it is FTXS30/36 Operation Manual, p. 36.
- FTX/FTK-BXVJU: hold either timer cancel button for 5 seconds (the poster draws them as ON/CANCEL and OFF/CANCEL), then press the same button until the indoor unit gives a long beep FTX/FTK-BXVJU Operation Manual, p. 1, section 9.
- BRC52B wireless remote: ON TIMER CANCEL or OFF TIMER CANCEL, the same way BRC52B Remote Controller Manual, pp. 1-3 and 1-4. Daikin’s service manual for the FTK/FTX-AXVJU units names the BRC52A and BRC52B as their remotes AXVJU Service Manual SM-5WM-Y-NA-B1, p. 33.
- BRC51D61 wired remote: the LED blinks when there is an error, and the controller blinks the error code BRC51D61 Wired Remote Controller Manual, p. 11.
To leave the code display, hold the same button for about 5 seconds. It also clears by itself if you press nothing: after 1 minute in the FTX/FTXN-NMVJU, FTXS30/36, FTX/FTK-BXVJU and BRC52B manuals, “after a while” in the FTXM-WVJU9 and FTXQ-ASBU9 manuals FTX/FTXN-NMVJU Operation Manual, p. 30; FTXS30/36 Operation Manual, p. 36; FTX/FTK-BXVJU Operation Manual, p. 1, section 9; BRC52B Remote Controller Manual, p. 1-4; FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 49. If no code gives a long beep, Daikin’s service manuals say that not all error codes are displayed in this check and describe a second method for service technicians FTXM-W/V Service Manual SiUS042113EA, pp. 93–94.
To know which rows apply to you, find the model name. The parts drawings in the owner’s manuals mark it on the indoor unit, and on FTXQ-ASBU9 units also on the side or front of the outdoor unit FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 5; FTXQ-ASBU9 Operation Manual, pp. 5–6.
Why one code has several rows
Daikin words the same code differently from one manual to the next, so the table has one row per wording (differences in capitals and spacing aside), with the series and page it comes from. The owner’s manuals for FTXM-WVJU9, FTXQ-ASBU9, FTX/FTXN-NMVJU and FTXS30/36 print short tables in SYSTEM, INDOOR UNIT and OUTDOOR UNIT groups. The FTX/FTK-BXVJU poster and the two remote controller manuals print a longer list of 50 codes; the remote manuals head it “For Inverter only” and do not say which indoor units they serve BRC52B Remote Controller Manual, p. 1-3; BRC51D61 Wired Remote Controller Manual, p. 11. Rows for FTX30/36WVJU9, FTXS-L and FTK/FTX-AXVJU come from service manuals, because no owner’s manual for those units could be downloaded from Daikin’s site. Most code names are the same across the FTXM-W/V, FTXS30/36H, FTXS-L, FTX-W and FTK-B/FTX-B service manuals; where a service manual names a code differently from the owner’s table for the same units, the row’s note gives both.
Some codes do not mean the same thing everywhere. E5 on FTXQ-ASBU9 includes the high pressure switch, which FTXM-WVJU9 shows as E3 FTXQ-ASBU9 Operation Manual, p. 28; FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 50. H7 and H8 change with the series. In the grouped owner’s tables C9 and H9 carry the same words, “FAULTY SUCTION AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR”, one under INDOOR UNIT and one under OUTDOOR UNIT FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 50.
The only owner’s manual on Daikin’s site for the FTX09/12/15WMVJU9, listed under AURORA, contains French pages only (FTX-WMVJU9 Operation Manual, French pages), so it is not used here. Codes such as U9, U4-01 or U9-01 do not appear in any Daikin wall-unit manual used for this table, and neither do numeric codes such as 11 or 51.
What a blinking light means
On FTXM-WVJU9 and FTXQ-ASBU9 units the OPERATION lamp is green FTXQ-ASBU9 Operation Manual, p. 5. Lit means the unit is running; blinking means “Check the error code.” FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 5. A blink about every 0.5 seconds is the unit’s notice of an abnormality FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 49; FTXQ-ASBU9 Operation Manual, p. 27. None of the Daikin manuals used here gives a table that turns a number of blinks into a code. The AXVJU service manual says its blue LED’s blinking pattern “does not indicate error details” and that the code is read with the remote AXVJU Service Manual SM-5WM-Y-NA-B1, pp. 31–32.
The manuals explain these lights and stops, and none of them is an error code:
- The orange wireless LAN adapter lamp on FTXM-WVJU9 units blinks to show the adapter’s connection state FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, pp. 5, 40.
- FTX/FTK-BXVJU units light their LED by mode: light blue for COOL, orange for HEAT, yellow for FAN FTX/FTK-BXVJU Operation Manual, p. 1, section 7.
- With the OPERATION lamp lit, the unit may stop after a sudden large voltage fluctuation and start again by itself in about 3 minutes FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 46; FTXS30/36 Operation Manual, p. 34.
- In heating, the unit stops for defrost with a flowing sound for about 4 to 12 minutes FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 45; FTXQ-ASBU9 Operation Manual, p. 23; FTX/FTXN-NMVJU Operation Manual, p. 26.
Clearing a code
The owner’s manuals do not erase a code. For a blinking OPERATION lamp they say: turn off the power with the circuit breaker and restart with the remote controller; if the lamp still blinks, check the error code and consult your dealer. The same table asks whether the air filters are dirty and whether anything blocks the air inlet or outlet of the indoor or outdoor unit; the FTX/FTXN-NMVJU table asks only about blockage FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 46; FTXQ-ASBU9 Operation Manual, p. 24; FTX/FTXN-NMVJU Operation Manual, p. 27. The FTXS30/36 manual gives the same checks and sends you to the service shop if the lamp still flashes FTXS30/36 Operation Manual, p. 34. After the breaker goes back on, the unit takes about 3 to 10 minutes to prepare before it runs FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 47; FTXQ-ASBU9 Operation Manual, p. 25.
The FTXM-WVJU9 and FTXQ-ASBU9 manuals add a chart by code FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, pp. 49–50; FTXQ-ASBU9 Operation Manual, pp. 27–28:
- E7: foreign matter inside the outdoor unit. L3, L4, L5: something blocking the outdoor unit’s air outlet. For both, the chart says to turn off the circuit breaker first, then power on and operate.
- U0 and F3, plus F8 on FTXM-WVJU9: turn off the circuit breaker and call your dealer.
- Every other code: if the lamp stays lit after the unit has run for a while, keep using it. If it blinks again, turn off the circuit breaker and call your dealer.
A code that comes back after the restart is where every one of these manuals sends you to the dealer or service shop. The restart and the filter and blockage checks are written for the symptom, a blinking OPERATION lamp, not for a particular code. That is why the table marks only E7, L3, L4 and L5 (on FTXM-WVJU9 and FTXQ-ASBU9 units) as codes with an owner check, and every other fault code as technician work. The FTXM-WVJU9 manual also says to wait at least 5 minutes after stopping the unit before you turn off the power, or water may leak FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 4. The FTX/FTK-BXVJU poster says to switch off the power when you notice a malfunction and to call your dealer or serviceman if the fault persists FTX/FTK-BXVJU Operation Manual, p. 1, section 10.
When to stop and call a professional
Stop the unit, turn off the circuit breaker and call your dealer if there is a burning smell, the power cord is hot or damaged, you hear an abnormal sound, the breaker trips often, a switch or button keeps failing, or water leaks from the indoor unit FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 51; FTXQ-ASBU9 Operation Manual, p. 29. The manuals say not to repair or modify the unit yourself, and not to do electrical or grounding work unless you are licensed to FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, pp. 4, 51.
FTXM-WVJU9 and FTXQ-ASBU9 units are filled with R32, which the FTXQ manual marks as refrigerant safety group A2L FTXQ-ASBU9 Operation Manual, p. 3. For a refrigerant leak the manual says to consult your dealer, and warns that refrigerant is heavier than air and a massive leak can deplete oxygen, especially in basements, and that refrigerant gas may produce toxic gas in contact with fire, such as from a fan heater, stove or cooking device FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 3. The R410A FTX/FTK-BXVJU poster says a unit that is not cooling properly may be leaking refrigerant and to call your dealer FTX/FTK-BXVJU Operation Manual, p. 1, safety precautions.
Daikin’s service manual says: “Servicing shall be performed only as recommended by the manufacturer and licensed or certified in their jurisdiction.” FTXM-W/V Service Manual SiUS042113EA, p. 2. Refrigerant work is for a technician certified under EPA Section 608. The warning box on each code page quotes the FTXM-WVJU9 manual; the FTXQ-ASBU9 manual prints the same warnings FTXQ-ASBU9 Operation Manual, p. 3.
