Guardian table: 1600 and 1603; Next Generation table: 1600. Generac's article covers 1600–1603 and lists load and fuel checks for owners. Owner's manuals: UNDERSPEED, “Contact an IASD.” (Guardian 10–26 kW Owner's Manual, p. 34; Next Generation 10–28 kW Owner's Manual, p. 38).

What it means

The engine is turning too slowly. Generac’s article says the unit is overloaded or has a fuel supply problem, and adds airflow and missed maintenance to the list of things to check (Generac Help Center, “What Does It Mean When My Generator Displays an Alarm: Underspeed, Error Codes 1600-1603”, Oct 2, 2025). The owner’s manuals give one remedy for UNDERSPEED: contact an IASD, Generac’s Independent Authorized Service Dealer Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 34; Next Generation manual, p. 38.

Check these first

The manuals give no owner steps for this alarm. Generac’s 1600 article lists these checks before the call:

  1. Look for an overload. The article says audible swings in engine speed are a sign, and that an appliance’s starting wattage can be 3 to 4 times its running wattage. Switch off the loads you can do without, by unplugging them or turning off their breakers in the main panel, and see whether the generator runs normally with no load.
  2. If you have a Generac Load Manager or Smart A/C module, check that it works and that its lockouts are set (1600 article).
  3. Check that the fuel shutoff valve is fully open (ON); the article says a closed or partly closed valve keeps the right amount of fuel from reaching the unit.
  4. On propane, check the tank. The 1600 article’s fuel checks ask for a level above 30%; its outage scenario says levels below 35% can affect performance. On natural gas, check your supplier’s outage or supply alerts (1600 article). If you smell gas, follow Generac’s gas leak steps.
  5. Keep a 3 ft area around the unit clear of debris, plants and snow (1600 article).
  6. Clear the alarm for your series and start the unit in MANUAL with no load (1600 article).

When to call a licensed technician

  • The alarm comes back. The manual’s only remedy is an IASD Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 34.
  • Fuel pressure. The 1600 article says only qualified professionals should check it, and only after the simpler causes are ruled out.
  • Fuel selection and fuel jet position on Guardian units, and the Field Pro fuel setting on Next Generation units. The 1600 article says these are set during installation and are unlikely to be wrong on a unit that was not recently installed.
  • The air filter and the rest of the maintenance schedule, which the article also lists. Generac recommends that an IASD do all maintenance Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 22.

Notes for different models

Generac’s Guardian table lists Underspeed as 1600 and 1603 and its Next Generation table as 1600 (Generac Help Center, “What Error Codes Do I Need to Call a Dealer For?”, Sep 21, 2026); the 1600 article covers 1600–1603. The Mobile Link message the article gives is “The generator has experienced an underspeed alarm. Please contact a dealer.”
