How to read a Carrier furnace code
These pages cover gas furnaces sold as Carrier, Bryant and Payne. Several models across the three brands print the same service label: the Bryant 926TC carries the label of the Carrier 59TP6C and 59TP7A II926TC-01, p. 56; 59TP6C-01SI, p. 56, and the Payne PG80ESAA carries the label of the Carrier 58SB0A and 58SC0A and the Bryant 810SA IM-PG80ESA-05, p. 26; 58SC0A-05SI, p. 26.
The code is flashed by an LED on the furnace control board. You see it through a view port, sight glass or indicator in the blower access door OM9GFRC-02, p. 11; 58SC0A-05SI, p. 31; 59TP6A-10SI, p. 78. The labels define each code as a two-digit number: the first digit is the number of short flashes, the second the number of long flashes 59MN7A-01T, p. 8; TG-GFC80-02, p. 6. Three short flashes followed by three long ones are code 33; one short and four long are code 14. The label of the Carrier 59TN6B and Bryant 986TC calls the code a single or two digit number and counts the long flashes after a plus (+) sign 59TN6B-01SI, p. 60.
On boards with an amber LED the labels print three states that are not codes 59SC5A-13SI, p. 67; 58SC0A-05SI, p. 26; 59TN6B-01SI, p. 60; the same wording is in the troubleshooting guides 59MN7A-01T, p. 8; TG-GFC80-02, p. 6:
- Steady on: the control has 24 VAC power.
- Rapid flashing: line voltage (115 VAC) polarity is reversed. The 59SP6A, 59TP6A and 59TP6B labels add “or furnace not grounded” 59SP6A-01SI, p. 59; 59TP6A-10SI, p. 73, and the 59SU5A, Bryant 935SA and 59CU5A labels add a check for poor or no ground 59SU5A-05SI, p. 51; 59CU5A-01SI, p. 65. Boards with a 3-digit display show this as 10.1, and the furnace will not operate 59TP6C-01SI, p. 56.
- Off: the label’s check is a voltage measurement at the control, which is technician work 59MN7A-01T, p. 8. The owner’s checklist covers fuses, circuit breakers and the electrical power supply switch OM9GFRC-02, p. 11. Carrier’s 80% owner’s manual also asks whether the blower access door is firmly in place 80GSFRN-C-03OM, p. 7, and its component drawing shows a blower door safety switch without describing it 80GSFRN-C-03OM, p. 2. On the 59TP6C the installation manual says that switch removes 115-volt power from the control 59TP6C-01SI, p. 53.
The documents call the LED amber. The labels for the 58SB0A, 58SC0A, Bryant 810SA and Payne PG80ESAA, for the 58MCB, and for the 58STA and Payne PG8MAA also mention boards with a red LED, on which a power interruption can erase the stored code 58SC0A-05SI, p. 26; 58MCB-4SM, p. 15; 58ST-24SI, p. 43. None of the documents describes an orange or yellow light, so a search for a solid orange or yellow light has no direct answer in them.
Boards with a 3-digit display (Carrier 59TP6C, 59TP7A and 58SP0B, Bryant 926TC, 800SB and 935SB, Payne PG96VTAB) show a major code in the first two digits and a minor code in the third, such as 33.1. The label says the major code is also shown on the LED indicator through the door, in the same short and long pattern 59TP6C-01SI, p. 56. The display and its buttons are on the control board and need the board powered 59TP6C-01SI, p. 53, so the minor digit is for the technician. On the 59TP6C, letters on the display such as iDl, Ht1, Ht2, CL1, CL2, Cfn or Hpd are operating modes, not faults 59TP6C-01SI, p. 54.
The Carrier 58SU0A has a multicolored LED that flashes a count in red, amber or green 58SU0A-05SI, p. 30. Red counts from 1 to 7 are faults, for example 1 red flash, System Lockout: Retries Exceeded, and 4 red flashes, Main Limit Circuit Open. Amber 1 to 3 are Low Flame Sense, ID Plug Failure and Control Fuse Open. Green 1 to 3 report a call for heating, a call for cooling and continuous fan operation 58SU0A-05SI, p. 36. Its steady and rapid states also differ from the amber boards: steady red is an internal control fault, which the document says the control will try to auto-reset, with a power cycle recommended; steady green is standby; rapid red is reversed line polarity; rapid green is the clearing of the error history; off means no 24 VAC power to the control 58SU0A-05SI, p. 36. Two-digit codes do not apply to this furnace.
The code chart itself is a service label on the blower or control door, or a service booklet on the blower access door, depending on the model 59TP6A-10SI, p. 78; 59SC5A-13SI, p. 73; 59SU5A-05SI, p. 50. Carrier’s owner’s manual for condensing furnaces points to an information booklet inside the main furnace door OM9GFRC-02, p. 10. The owner’s manuals print no code list, and Carrier’s 80% owner’s manual does not mention the LED at all (80GSFRN-C-03OM). Carrier’s article “Furnace Repair Service | Signs, Costs & Troubleshooting” (carrier.com, undated) tells owners to match the flashes to the chart on the panel and tell the technician.
Owner steps on these pages quote Carrier’s owner’s manual for condensing furnaces (OM9GFRC-02, edition 04/20; the later 90GSFRN-C-03OM, edition 03/22, replaces it and has the same sections on the same pages) and for 80% furnaces (80GSFRN-C-03OM, edition 08/22). Bryant’s condensing owner’s manual has the same sections on the same pages (OM9GFRB-02).
To find your rows in the table you need the model number. Bryant’s “HVAC Troubleshooting Tips” page places it on a rating plate sticker on the upper left side inside the furnace, behind the front door. The drawing in Carrier’s 80% owner’s manual puts the rating plate on the blower door 80GSFRN-C-03OM, p. 2. Before you take a door off, write down the LED code and turn off the power: the owner’s manual says to turn off the electrical power supply and install a lockout tag before removing the access doors OM9GFRC-02, p. 10. Carrier’s owner’s manuals also ask you to record the product or model number and the serial number, on the back page of the condensing manual OM9GFRC-02, p. 11; in the 80% manual the request is on p. 7 and the blanks are on p. 8 80GSFRN-C-03OM, pp. 7–8. The Series column uses the model names printed on the installation manuals, such as 59SC5A or PG96VAT; one group of rows comes from Carrier’s troubleshooting guide TG-GFC80-02, which names no models. These pages do not cover Bryant 987M, 925T, 927T, 984T or Legacy 3xx furnaces, or Payne series not named in the table.
On Infinity systems, the installation instructions for the SYSTXCCUIZ01 zone control list furnace codes 13, 14, 15, 21, 22, 23, 24, 33, 41 and 45 and say each code number is the flash code on the furnace’s circuit board. For 13, 14 and 21 the system heats only with the heat pump, if there is one, until the code clears UIZ01-07SI, p. 20. The owner’s manuals of the Infinity System Control and the Infinity Touch Control list no furnace codes (OMSYSTXCCITC-08; OMSYSTXCCITW-09).
Why one number can mean different things
The same number does not mean the same thing on every board. Code 31 has several wordings: just “pressure switch” on several single-stage labels, the HPS or the high-heat switch and its relay on others, the medium or high switch on modulating boards, and a pressure transducer reading on ultra low NOx models (see the code 31 page). Code 32 is not on every label: the 59SC5A and 59SP5A have no 32, and their 31 covers both the low and the high pressure switch 59SC5A-13SI, p. 67; 59SP5A-18SI, p. 70. On the 59SU5A, Bryant 935SA, 59CU5A and Payne PG80ESU, 23 means pressure above 0.15 in. w.c. at start-up, not a pressure switch that did not open 59SU5A-05SI, p. 51; GFULN80-G-01TS, p. 6. The 3-digit tables differ too: 31.1 is “Pressure switch open” on the 58SP0B and “Open Main pressure switch.” on the Bryant 800SB 58SP0B-01SI, p. 30; II800SB-01, p. 31.
Related models can differ as well. The 59MN7A Series 100 guide and the 59MN7B label word codes 21, 24 and 35 differently 59MN7A-01T, pp. 8–9; 59MN7B-02SI, p. 73, and the Bryant 935SA, with an LED label, and the 935SB, with a 3-digit display, have different code sets II935SA-05, p. 51; II935SB-01, p. 48. Read the rows for your series, and treat the label on your own furnace door as the final word.
Code memory
The control stores status codes; code 11, “NO PREVIOUS CODE”, means none is stored. How long a code stays depends on the board:
- Most labels: stored codes are erased automatically after 72 hours 59SC5A-13SI, p. 67.
- Red LED boards in the 58SB0A, 58SC0A, 810SA and PG80ESAA family, the 58MCB, and the 58STA and PG8MAA can also lose stored codes when power to the control is interrupted 58SC0A-05SI, p. 26; 58MCB-4SM, p. 15; 58ST-24SI, p. 43.
- 58PAV and 58RAV Series 131: codes are erased when power (115 V or 24 V) to the control is interrupted, or 48 hours after each fault is cleared 58P_R-9SM, p. 9.
- On the 59TP6C, the display’s FLt menu keeps the last 7 faults 59TP6C-01SI, p. 54.
Calling stored codes back up is done on the control board, with the door open and the board powered, and the manuals write it for technicians, so these pages do not describe it. What you can do is write the code down before you turn off the power or remove the blower access door, as the owner’s manual asks OM9GFRC-02, p. 10.
Clearing a code
The owner’s manuals give no step for clearing a code. The labels say some lockouts clear themselves: 13 and 14 after three hours, and 45 after a one-hour lockout 59SC5A-13SI, p. 67. The owner’s manuals give you two related steps:
- If a manual reset rollout or limit switch has tripped, push its button, with the power off; if it trips again, shut down the furnace and call for service OM9GFRC-02, p. 11; 80GSFRN-C-03OM, p. 7. The pages for codes 13 and 33 cover this.
- If the burners fail to light and the furnace locks out, shut down the furnace and call your dealer OM9GFRC-02, p. 6. Carrier’s 80% manual says: if lockout occurs or the blower does not come on, shut down your furnace and call your dealer for service 80GSFRN-C-03OM, p. 5.
The shutdown steps: set the thermostat to its lowest setting and its mode to OFF, close the external manual gas valve, turn off the electrical supply, remove the main furnace door, turn the gas control switch to OFF and replace the door. If you shut the furnace down because of a malfunction, call your dealer as soon as possible OM9GFRC-02, p. 6.
A reset does not remove the cause. A rollout switch that trips again means a service call OM9GFRC-02, p. 11, and the label for 45 says to replace the control if the code repeats 59SC5A-13SI, p. 67.
When to stop and call a professional
The owner’s manual says installation and service must be performed by a qualified installer, service agency or the gas supplier OM9GFRC-02, p. 1. Stop and call when:
- You smell gas. The steps from the owner’s manual are at the top of every code page OM9GFRC-02, p. 1.
- A carbon monoxide alarm sounds. Carrier’s Furnace Repair article says to leave the home immediately and contact emergency services, and to have a qualified HVAC professional inspect the furnace before it is operated again.
- The vent pipe has holes, is obstructed or is not connected. The manuals say: “DO NOT OPERATE YOUR FURNACE. Call your dealer for service.” OM9GFRC-02, p. 9; 80GSFRN-C-03OM, p. 7
- The gas supply fails to shut off or the furnace overheats. Shut off the gas valve to the furnace before the electrical supply OM9GFRC-02, p. 4.
- Any part of the furnace has been under water. Do not use it; a qualified service agency should inspect it and replace the gas controls, control system parts and electrical parts that got wet OM9GFRC-02, p. 2.
- A reset button trips again, or the furnace still fails to operate after the owner’s checklist OM9GFRC-02, p. 11.
- The work goes past the filter. Untrained people can clean and replace air filters; all other operations must be performed by trained service personnel OM9GFRC-02, p. 2.
Carrier’s Furnace Repair article mentions relighting a pilot light on older units. That does not apply to the hot surface ignition furnaces covered here: their owner’s manuals say never to light the burners with a match or other source of flame OM9GFRC-02, p. 4; 80GSFRN-C-03OM, p. 3.
