Generac 1300 low oil pressure: check the oil level

“Low Oil Pressure”
What it means
The engine stopped, or will not start, because oil pressure was too low. Generac’s article says the low oil pressure sensor triggered the shutdown because of inadequate oil, usually from oil consumption, leaks or missed maintenance (Generac Help Center, “What Does It Mean When My Generator Displays an Alarm: Low Oil Pressure, Error Code 1300?”, Sep 17, 2026). The manual’s remedy: check the oil level and add oil as needed; if the level is correct, contact an IASD, Generac’s Independent Authorized Service Dealer Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 34. The manual also says the generator will shut down if the oil level is low Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 24.
Check these first
- Let the engine cool before you check. Generac’s documents give different waits. If the generator was running in an outage, the manual’s oil check starts with the utility MLCB and the generator MLCB (main line circuit breaker) at OFF, a cool-down run of about one minute, then OFF and a five-minute wait Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 24. The Guardian section of Generac’s oil-level article asks for at least 5 minutes of running with no load plus 5 more minutes to cool before the OFF step; its Next Generation section gives about one minute, as the Next Generation manual does (Generac Help Center, “How Do I Check the Oil Level in My Home Standby Generator?”, Jan 26, 2026). The 1300 article asks for at least 30 minutes of cooling, to avoid injury or a wrong reading.
- Pull the dipstick, wipe it, push it all the way back in and pull it again. The oil should be at the FULL mark. If it is low, take the dipstick out, add the recommended oil through the fill cap up to FULL, then refit the dipstick and cap Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 24. The 1300 article warns not to overfill, and asks that the dipstick be fully inserted and the fill cap hand-tight, because loose parts can leak. On 816 cc engines, used in some 13, 14, 16 and 18 kW models, the dipstick screws in and should be screwed in fully for the reading (oil-level article).
- Look for oil leaks (1300 article). The manual’s schedule lists an inspection of lines and connections for fuel or oil leaks daily when the generator runs continuously Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 23.
- If the oil level was correct, contact an IASD Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 34.
- If the oil was low and you topped it up, note that Generac’s documents disagree about restarting. The 1300 article says to clear the alarm and reset, and that clearing the alarm and restarting is sometimes all that is needed. Generac’s article on test runs says: “Do not attempt to run the generator if the error is related to oil pressure, oil temperature, or engine coolant. Doing so may cause engine damage. Contact an Independent Authorized Service Dealer.” (Generac Help Center, “How do I test my generator in manual mode after clearing an error?”, Jun 4, 2026). The manual’s alarm table says to add oil and does not mention a restart Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 34. This page does not choose between them. If you are unsure, do not run the generator and call an IASD. If you do restart, clear the alarm for your series; the manual’s oil check ends with AUTO, a few minutes of warm-up, then the generator MLCB ON and the utility MLCB ON Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 24.
During a long outage, the manuals say to check the oil level daily Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 24; Next Generation 10–28 kW Owner’s Manual, p. 28. The 1300 article adds a shutdown every 24 hours, for 30 minutes, to let the unit cool and to check the oil; the owner’s manuals cited here do not state that rule.
When to call a licensed technician
- The oil level is correct and the alarm stays or comes back Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 34.
- The engine keeps using oil. The manual’s troubleshooting table sends a faulty engine breather to an IASD and lists damaged gaskets, seals or hoses and a restricted air filter as other causes Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 33.
- The oil filter and the oil drain cap. The 1300 article asks that both be hand-tight, but they are reached with the front panel off, as in the manual’s oil change procedure Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 24, and the manual’s maintenance section carries the DANGER label “Automatic start-up. Disconnect utility power and render unit inoperable before working on unit.” Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 22.
- Oil and filter changes. Generac recommends that an IASD do all maintenance Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 22.
Notes for different models
- The Next Generation owner’s manual has the same LOW OIL PRESSURE row Next Generation 10–28 kW Owner’s Manual, p. 37. Its oil check is different: unlock and lift the lid, set the generator MLCB to OFF, press SERVICE so the blue light comes on, run about one minute to cool if it was running in an outage, press OFF, wait five minutes and remove the front panel before using the dipstick Next Generation 10–28 kW Owner’s Manual, p. 28.
- Generac’s Next Generation code table has no 1300. It lists engine oil pressure alarms as 3301–3304 and oil level warnings as 2126 and 5415–5417 (Generac Help Center, “What Error Codes Do I Need to Call a Dealer For?”, Sep 21, 2026).
