Owner checks, then technician

What it means

Code 13 is one short flash followed by three long ones. On most Carrier, Bryant and Payne labels it is “LIMIT CIRCUIT LOCKOUT”: a limit or flame rollout switch stayed open longer than 3 minutes and the control locked out. The control resets itself after three hours, and the label sends you to code 33 for the causes 59SC5A-13SI, p. 67. Code 33 is the same open switch before those 3 minutes pass; after that, 33 changes to 13 59SC5A-13SI, p. 67.

On the 58STA, 58SB0A, 58SC0A, 820SA, 58TP0A and 58TN0A families the label also lists the draft safeguard and a blocked vent switch, if used 58SC0A-05SI, p. 26; 58TN0A-02SI, p. 35. On two-stage boards the lockout also follows 10 successive limit trips during high heat, and on the modulating 59MN7B during maximum heat 59TP6A-10SI, p. 73; 59MN7B-02SI, p. 73.

Check these first

Carrier’s owner’s manuals have no code table. These steps come from their general checklist, “Before you request a service call”, where it matches a cause the label gives for 13 or, through its “Refer to #33”, for 33.

  1. Write the code down before you turn off the power or remove the blower access door, as Carrier’s owner’s manual for condensing furnaces asks OM9GFRC-02, p. 10. Carrier’s 80% owner’s manual does not mention the LED. How to count the flashes: reading a Carrier code.
  2. Most labels list “Dirty filter or restricted duct system” under 33; the 59SU5A, Bryant 935SA, 59CU5A and Payne PG80ESU labels list it under 13 itself 59SC5A-13SI, p. 67; 59SU5A-05SI, p. 51; GFULN80-G-01TS, p. 6. The owner’s manual lets you check for a dirty air filter and for return-air or supply-air grilles that are blocked or closed OM9GFRC-02, pp. 10–11; 80GSFRN-C-03OM, p. 7. It says a dirty filter can make the furnace overheat and shut down automatically, and asks for the filter to be checked every four weeks OM9GFRC-02, p. 7.
  3. Through code 33, the label says the flame rollout switch requires a manual reset 59SC5A-13SI, p. 67. The owner’s manual gives you that step, behind the furnace door. First turn off the electrical power supply to the furnace and install a lockout tag before removing the access doors OM9GFRC-02, p. 10; Carrier’s 80% manual says to turn off the electrical power supply before removing the access doors 80GSFRN-C-03OM, pp. 5, 7. On condensing furnaces, push the button on the manual reset rollout switch on the burner box; if it trips again, shut down the furnace and call for service OM9GFRC-02, p. 11. Carrier’s 80% manual names manual reset limit switches on the ends of the burner enclosure, reset the same way; if one trips a second time, turn off the furnace and call for service 80GSFRN-C-03OM, p. 7. The 80% manual does not use the word rollout; this page treats those switches as the ones the label calls the flame rollout switch.
  4. The manual’s start-up steps replace the main furnace door before the electrical supply is turned on OM9GFRC-02, p. 5, steps 7 and 8.
  5. The label says the control clears the lockout itself after three hours 59SC5A-13SI, p. 67. If you shut the furnace down because of a malfunction, the owner’s manual says to call your dealer as soon as possible OM9GFRC-02, p. 6.

The 59SU5A, 935SA, 59CU5A and PG80ESU labels do not mention a rollout switch for code 13, so step 3 does not come from their labels 59SU5A-05SI, p. 51; 59CU5A-01SI, p. 65; GFULN80-G-01TS, p. 6. The 33 lists of the 59TP6A, 59TP6B and PG96VAT, the 59TN6B and 986TC, the 59MN7B and the 58MVP do not name the filter, so step 2 does not come from their labels 59TP6A-10SI, p. 73; 59TN6B-01SI, p. 60; 59MN7B-02SI, p. 73; 58-06T, p. 8.

When to call a licensed technician

  • The rollout or limit switch trips again after you push the button OM9GFRC-02, p. 11; 80GSFRN-C-03OM, p. 7.
  • The furnace still fails to operate after the checklist OM9GFRC-02, p. 11.
  • The causes listed under 33 on most labels: a loose blower wheel, a defective blower motor or capacitor, a defective switch or its connections, a restricted vent, vent sizing, excessive wind, and inadequate combustion air supply when the flame rollout switch is open 59SC5A-13SI, p. 67. Two-stage and modulating labels list other items; see the code 33 page.
  • On the 59SU5A, 935SA and 59CU5A, the 13 label lists a loose blower wheel, a restricted vent, vent sizing, a dirty filter or restricted duct system, and a defective switch or connections 59SU5A-05SI, p. 51; 59CU5A-01SI, p. 65. The PG80ESU guide adds excess wind and inadequate combustion air supply with the burner thermal switch open GFULN80-G-01TS, p. 6.
  • The owner’s manual lets untrained people clean and replace air filters and says all other operations must be performed by trained service personnel OM9GFRC-02, p. 2.

Notes for different models

  • The 58PAV and 58RAV Series 131 label calls 13 “LIMIT OR FLAME ROLLOUT SWITCH LOCKOUT”, with an automatic reset after three hours and a manual reset for the flame rollout switch 58P_R-9SM, p. 9.
  • On the 59SU5A, 935SA and 59CU5A the label gives the condition as “Lockout occurs if a limit is open.”, with no 3-minute time 59SU5A-05SI, p. 51; 59CU5A-01SI, p. 65. On the PG80ESU it names a limit, the draft safeguard, the burner thermal switch or a blocked vent switch, if used GFULN80-G-01TS, p. 6.
  • The 59SU5A, 935SA and 59CU5A also have code 26, “BURNER THERMAL SWITCH (BTS) open”, which the label describes as a permanent lockout if the switch is open during a call for heat 59SU5A-05SI, p. 51; 59CU5A-01SI, p. 65.
  • Boards with a 3-digit display show 13.1, “Limit Lockout - switch open longer than 3 minutes in Main Limit circuit” 59TP6C-01SI, p. 56; IM-PG96VTAB-01, p. 54; 58SP0B-01SI, p. 30; II800SB-01, p. 31. On the Bryant 935SB it reads “Limit Lockout – switch opened in the limit circuit” II935SB-01, p. 48.
  • The 58SU0A has no code 13. An open main limit circuit is 4 red flashes, with a 3-hour lockout 58SU0A-05SI, p. 36.
  • The Infinity zone control lists furnace code 13; for 13 the system heats only with the heat pump, if there is one, until the code clears UIZ01-07SI, p. 20.
