EL 0C

“System Lacks Refrigerant”

DIY 5th Gen, DIY Select, Easy Pro, Advantage 5th Gen, DIY 5th Gen Cassette, DIY Hybrid Air Handler, Olympus Ducted · DIY 5th Gen owner's p. 39; Select owner's p. 41; Easy Pro owner's p. 41; Advantage 5th Gen owner's p. 47; DIY 5th Gen cassette owner's p. 45; Hybrid air handler owner's p. 56; Olympus ducted owner's p. 43
Owner checks, then technician

Advantage prints “System Lack refrigerant”. The DIY 5th Gen manual lists EL0C with its refrigerant leakage detection codes (DIY 5th Gen Single-Zone Installation & Owner's Manual, p. 11), but the service manual judges it from compressor behavior and from operating changes caused by excessive exhaust temperature, not from a leak sensor (DIY 5th Gen Single-Zone Service Manual, p. 65). The hybrid air handler and Olympus service manuals' engineer-mode lists call EL 0C “Refrigerant leak detected” (DIY Hybrid Air Handler Service Manual, p. 73; Olympus Ducted Air Handler Service Manual, Troubleshooting p. 7).

What it means

EL 0C points to the refrigerant system, but the name and the logic behind it differ by generation. The 5th Gen DIY, Select, Easy Pro, cassette, hybrid air handler and Olympus tables call it “System Lacks Refrigerant”; Advantage 5th Gen prints “System Lack refrigerant” Advantage 5th Gen Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 47. The 4th Gen E Star and Advantage tables call it “Refrigerant leak detected”, with 8 operation lamp flashes and the timer lamp off DIY E Star 4th Gen Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 41.

Neither the 5th Gen nor the 4th Gen troubleshooting section describes a leak sensor behind EL 0C. The 5th Gen manual judges the refrigeration system abnormal from the compressor’s behavior and from changes in operating parameters caused by excessive exhaust temperature DIY 5th Gen Single-Zone Service Manual, p. 65. The 4th Gen E Star manual watches the indoor coil after the compressor starts: in the first 5 minutes, if the coil temperature does not stay at least 1.8°F (1°C) below its starting value for 4 seconds and the compressor does not stay above 50 Hz for 3 minutes, and this happens 3 times, the code shows and the unit turns off DIY E Star 4th Gen Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 50.

Units with a refrigerant sensor have their own codes: EH C1 when the sensor detects leakage, EH C2 when the sensor is out of range and leakage is detected, EH C3 when the sensor is out of range, EC C1 when another indoor unit’s sensor detects leakage, and FH CC for a sensor error DIY 5th Gen Single-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 39. The DIY 5th Gen manual lists EL0C together with them under refrigerant leakage detection, and says EHC1, EHC2, EHC3 and ECC1 apply only to units with a refrigerant sensor DIY 5th Gen Single-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 11.

Check these first

MrCool’s owner’s manuals give no steps for EL 0C itself. On the DIY 5th Gen, Select, Easy Pro, Advantage 5th Gen, cassette and Olympus manuals the procedure for any error code is:

  1. Wait about 10 minutes; the problem may resolve itself DIY 5th Gen Single-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 38.
  2. If not, disconnect the power, connect it again and turn the unit on DIY 5th Gen Single-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 38.
  3. If EL 0C comes back, disconnect the power and contact MrCool with your model number and a description of the problem DIY 5th Gen Single-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, pp. 37–38.

The hybrid air handler manual prints no wait-and-restart step; it says to contact a local dealer or MRCOOL customer service DIY Hybrid Air Handler Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 54. The 4th Gen E Star manual prints the steps with “roughly 10 minutes” and adds “DO NOT attempt these repairs yourself” DIY E Star 4th Gen Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 41. The Advantage 4th Gen manual ends the steps with your nearest customer service center Advantage 4th Gen Owner’s and Installation Manual, p. 16. The 4th Gen cassette manual prints no steps; it says to contact a local dealer or the nearest customer service center DIY 4th Gen Cassette Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 53.

The same troubleshooting table words the low-refrigerant fix two ways: under poor cooling, “Check for leaks, re-seal if necessary, and top off refrigerant”; under poor heating, “Call technician to check for leaks, re-seal if necessary, and top off refrigerant” DIY 5th Gen Single-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 38. The safety section of the same manual says anyone working on or breaking into a refrigerant circuit should hold a current valid certificate DIY 5th Gen Single-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 4.

The DIY 5th Gen units use R-454B (DIY 5th Gen Single-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, cover). The manual’s symbol list says the appliance uses a flammable refrigerant and that leaked refrigerant exposed to an external ignition source is a fire risk DIY 5th Gen Single-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 8, and it warns that refrigerants may not contain an odor DIY 5th Gen Single-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 4. Not smelling anything does not rule out a leak.

When to call a licensed technician

Finding a leak, repairing it and charging refrigerant are technician work; in the US that means a technician certified under EPA Section 608. The DIY 5th Gen service manual’s check DIY 5th Gen Single-Zone Service Manual, p. 65:

  • restarts the unit 15 minutes after a power-off and looks at whether cool or warm air comes out of the indoor unit;
  • if it does, checks whether the T2 coil sensor is loose and whether the T1 room sensor sits too close to the evaporator, then the indoor board;
  • if it does not, checks the system for leaks, then repairs the leak and recharges, or corrects the refrigerant charge.

The parts it lists to prepare are the indoor PCB and additional refrigerant DIY 5th Gen Single-Zone Service Manual, p. 65. The 4th Gen E Star section adds the T2 sensor DIY E Star 4th Gen Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 50.

Notes for different models

  • The 4th Gen cassette table calls it “Refrigerant leakage detection” DIY 4th Gen Cassette Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 55. The 4th Gen multi-zone table has no EL 0C row; that manual says a detected leak shows as “EC” or “ELOC” or flashing LEDs DIY 4th Gen Multi-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 14.
  • DIY E Star 3rd Gen: the leak code is EC, “Refrigerant leakage detection”, with 7 operation LED flashes DIY E Star 3rd Gen Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 39. The manual says the indoor unit shows “EC” or “ELOC” or flashes LEDs when it detects leakage DIY E Star 3rd Gen Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 12.
  • The hybrid air handler and Olympus service manuals’ engineer-mode lists call EL 0C “Refrigerant leak detected”, while their owner’s manuals say “System lacks refrigerant” DIY Hybrid Air Handler Service Manual, p. 73; DIY Hybrid Air Handler Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 56; Olympus Ducted Air Handler Service Manual, Troubleshooting p. 7; Olympus Ducted Air Handler Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 43.
  • The Advantage 4th Gen service manual heads its section “EC/EL 0C” Advantage 4th Gen Service Manual, Troubleshooting p. 28.
