MrCool DF on the display: defrost mode

DF
“Defrost”
What it means
DF means the unit is defrosting. The DIY 5th Gen display list includes a display “When defrosting.” DIY 5th Gen Single-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 10, and the code table lists DF as “Defrost” DIY 5th Gen Single-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 39. The outdoor board can show DF as well DIY 5th Gen Single-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 40.
These tables mark DF “Normal Display, not error code”: DIY Select and Easy Pro DIY Select Installation & Owner’s Manual, pp. 41–42; Easy Pro Installation & Owner’s Manual, pp. 41–42, Advantage 5th Gen Advantage 5th Gen Installation & Owner’s Manual, pp. 46, 48, DIY 5th Gen multi-zone DIY 5th Gen Multi-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 48, and the outdoor board tables of the hybrid air handler and Olympus DIY Hybrid Air Handler Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 57; Olympus Ducted Air Handler Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 44. The DIY 4th Gen multi-zone outdoor table says “Normal Display, not an error code” DIY 4th Gen Multi-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 50.
The 4th Gen multi-zone manual explains why it happens. In heating, frost may form on the outdoor unit when the outdoor temperature is low and the humidity high, which lowers heating efficiency. The unit then stops heating and defrosts automatically. Defrost may take 4 to 10 minutes depending on the outdoor temperature and the frost on the outdoor coil, and the indoor and outdoor fans stop meanwhile DIY 4th Gen Multi-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 14. The 3rd Gen E Star manual says that in heat mode the indoor unit stops for a maximum of 10 minutes to defrost DIY E Star 3rd Gen Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 37. The 5th Gen owner’s manuals used here give no defrost time.
Check these first
The manuals give no action for DF. These are the points they make about defrost:
- Let the defrost finish. The manuals describe it as automatic and temporary DIY 4th Gen Multi-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 14; DIY E Star 3rd Gen Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 37.
- Do not try to speed it up. The safety section says: “Do not use any means to accelerate the defrosting process or to clean, other than those recommended by the manufacturer.” DIY 5th Gen Single-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 4.
- Expect mist and sound. White mist from both units when heating restarts after defrost, and a low hissing sound while defrosting, are listed as normal DIY 5th Gen Single-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 37.
- On multi-zone, cassette, hybrid air handler and Olympus indoor units, the operation light and the PRE-DEF indicator lit together mean the outdoor temperature is too cold and the anti-cold wind feature is on while the unit defrosts DIY 5th Gen Multi-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 46; DIY 5th Gen Cassette Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 43; DIY Hybrid Air Handler Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 54; Olympus Ducted Air Handler Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 40.
- In cold weather, keep the power on if your outdoor unit has an auxiliary electric heater: below 32°F (0°C) the manual strongly recommends keeping the unit plugged in at all times DIY 5th Gen Single-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 13.
When to call a licensed technician
The manuals give no service step for DF. Look further when heating stays poor after defrost ends. The manual’s checks for poor heating are an outdoor temperature that is “extremely low” (use an auxiliary heating device), cold air entering through doors and windows, and low refrigerant from a leak or long-term use, for which it says to call a technician to check for leaks, re-seal and top off refrigerant DIY 5th Gen Single-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 38. Refrigerant work is for a technician certified under EPA Section 608.
The DIY 5th Gen heat mode range is −13°F to 75°F (−25°C to 24°C) outdoors; outside the operating ranges, certain safety protection features may activate and disable the unit DIY 5th Gen Single-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 13. Low ambient temperature protection has its own code, PC 0L.
If the display shows a code from the EH, EL, EC or PC groups instead of DF, it is an error code; see the table. The manual says any maintenance and cleaning of the outdoor unit should be performed by an authorized dealer or a licensed service provider DIY 5th Gen Single-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 36.
Notes for different models
- Advantage 5th Gen prints the code as “dF” Advantage 5th Gen Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 46. The hybrid air handler and the DIY 4th Gen multi-zone outdoor tables call it “Defrosting” DIY Hybrid Air Handler Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 57; DIY 4th Gen Multi-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 50.
- DIY E Star 3rd Gen: the display section says the unit shows “dF” while defrosting DIY E Star 3rd Gen Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 6. The 4th Gen E Star error table has no DF row; its display section has a symbol that shows when the unit is defrosting DIY E Star 4th Gen Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 7.
- The DIY 5th Gen single-zone tables list DF among the error codes without the “Normal Display” mark DIY 5th Gen Single-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, pp. 39–40.
