Wi-Fi setup mode. Marked “Normal Display, not error code” in the Select, Easy Pro and Advantage 5th Gen tables and the DIY 4th Gen multi-zone guide; the DIY 5th Gen single-zone table has no mark. DIY Select and Easy Pro print “Wi-Fi”; Advantage and the 4th Gen guide print “WIFI”. The remote control manual says AP mode is used to complete wireless network configuration and is entered by pressing the LED button seven times within ten seconds (Mini-Split Remote Control Owner's Manual, p. 10).

What it means

AP on the indoor display is the Wi-Fi setup mode. The code tables call it “AP Mode of Wifi Connection” DIY 5th Gen Single-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 39. Of the tables that list AP, those that mark it “Normal Display, not error code” are DIY Select, Easy Pro, Advantage 5th Gen and the DIY 4th Gen multi-zone guide DIY Select Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 41; Easy Pro Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 41; Advantage 5th Gen Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 46; DIY 4th Gen Multi-Zone Troubleshooting & Solutions Guide, Troubleshooting p. 4. The DIY 5th Gen single-zone table lists AP without that mark. The remote control manual explains its purpose: “Choose AP mode to complete wireless network configuration.” Mini-Split Remote Control Owner’s Manual, p. 10.

The wireless network it sets up is for the wireless control feature, which lets app-control units be run from a mobile phone DIY 5th Gen Single-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 11.

Check these first

  1. If you are setting up Wi-Fi, AP is the expected display. The remote control manual says that on some units the SET button does not work for this, and gives the other way in: “To enter AP mode, continuously press the LED button seven times within ten seconds.” Mini-Split Remote Control Owner’s Manual, p. 10.
  2. The app side is in a separate document. The DIY 5th Gen quick start says the smartphone app setup instructions come with the Smart Controller Module DIY 5th Gen Quick Start Guide, p. 2. Those instructions are not among the documents used for this page.
  3. If AP appeared and you did not start Wi-Fi setup: the manuals used here do not say what else starts AP mode, how long it lasts, or how to leave it.
  4. The remote control manual used here covers DIY wall-mounted air handlers, Easy Pro, Advantage and Olympus wall-mounted and ducted air handlers (Mini-Split Remote Control Owner’s Manual, cover). For other units, check the remote manual that came with yours.

When to call a licensed technician

The manuals give no service step for AP. If the display shows a code from the EH, EL, EC or PC groups, that is an error code; the table on the MrCool page lists them by series. For an error code, the DIY 5th Gen manual’s procedure is to wait about 10 minutes, then disconnect and reconnect the power, and to contact MrCool if the code persists DIY 5th Gen Single-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 38; other series’ manuals word this step differently.

Notes for different models

  • Select prints “Wi-Fi” and Advantage “WIFI” DIY Select Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 41; Advantage 5th Gen Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 46.
  • DIY 4th Gen multi-zone: the display list includes a symbol for the “AP mode of WIFI connection” DIY 4th Gen Multi-Zone Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 8.
  • DIY E Star 3rd Gen: the error table has no AP. It has P7, “USB Smart Controller module not installed” DIY E Star 3rd Gen Installation & Owner’s Manual, p. 39.
