Indoor lamp, table 9-4: 5 blinks, then 2.5 seconds off; the upper lamp on GL and GS06–24, the left lamp on FS, FH and GS30/36. Indoor and outdoor units do not operate. Condition: “It consecutively occurs 3 times that the compressor stops for overcurrent protection or startup failure protection within 1 minute after startup.”

What it means

Table 9-4 of the indoor service manuals shows most codes as a number of blinks followed by a 2.5-second off period. Five blinks, a 2.5-second pause, then five again is “Outdoor power system” on GL, FS, FH and both GS groups MSZ-GL Indoor Service Manual OBH732D, p. 27; MSZ-FS Indoor Service Manual OBH872A, p. 24; MSZ-FH Indoor Service Manual OBH683E, p. 24; MSZ-GS Indoor Service Manual OBH874A, pp. 38–39. The lamp that blinks is the upper one on GL and GS06–24 and the left one on FS, FH and GS30/36.

The code is set when, three times in a row, the compressor stops for overcurrent protection or startup failure protection within 1 minute after it starts. The indoor and outdoor units then do not operate. When the indoor unit detects a fault from this table, its fan turns off and the lamp starts blinking MSZ-GL Indoor Service Manual OBH732D, p. 27.

Other places where five blinks means something else:

  • The outdoor unit’s board LED has its own counts. There, 5 blinks is high pressure protection, or, while the outdoor unit keeps running, outside temperature thermistor protection MUZ-GL Outdoor Service Manual OBH733J, pp. 46–47. The outdoor table lists “Outdoor power system”, with nearly the same condition, under a single blink every 2.5 seconds MUZ-GL Outdoor Service Manual OBH733J, p. 46.
  • In failure mode recall, a technician’s procedure, 5 blinks of the indoor lamp points to discharge temperature, and the manual notes that recall patterns differ from the check table MUZ-GL Outdoor Service Manual OBH733J, p. 44.
  • On P-Series PKA-A and PLA-A units, 5 beeps and blinks in self-check stand for P5 (drain pump error) or PA PKA-A24/30/36KA8 Service Manual TCH115A, p. 12. That table does not apply to MSZ units.

Check these first

The owner’s manuals give no owner fix for a blinking lamp. What they do cover:

  1. On a multi-zone system, make sure it is not standby. The FS, FH and GS06–24 manuals exclude a multi-system unit’s standby blink from the stop-and-call rule MSZ-FS Operating Instructions, p. En-13; MSZ-FH Operating Instructions, p. En-12; MSZ-GS06/09/12/15 Operating Instructions, p. En-13; MSZ-GS18 Operating Instructions, p. En-14; MSZ-GS24 Operating Instructions, p. En-14. In the GL and FS lamp charts, standby is the upper or left lamp lit with the other lamp blinking MSZ-GL Operating Instructions, p. En-5; MSZ-FS Operating Instructions, p. En-6, so five blinks of the upper or left lamp is not that state.
  2. Stop the unit with the remote and consult your dealer. Every owner’s manual here lists a blinking operation indicator lamp as a reason to stop using the unit MSZ-GL Operating Instructions, p. En-11; MSZ-GS06/09/12/15 Operating Instructions, p. En-13.
  3. Do not switch the breaker off and on while the unit runs. The owner’s manuals warn that this can create sparks and cause fire, and say to switch the unit off with the remote before turning the breaker off MSZ-GL Operating Instructions, p. En-1.
  4. If you notice a burning smell, stop the unit, turn the breaker off or unplug it, and consult your dealer MSZ-GL Operating Instructions, p. En-1. A breaker that trips often is also on the stop-and-consult list MSZ-GL Operating Instructions, p. En-11.

The owner’s manuals explain two other stops, each with “please wait”: heating stops for up to 10 minutes while the outdoor unit defrosts, and the unit cannot be operated for about 3 minutes after a restart MSZ-GL Operating Instructions, p. En-11.

When to call a licensed technician

  • The table’s remedy is service work: the inverter and compressor check in the outdoor unit’s service manual, and a check of the stop valve MSZ-GL Indoor Service Manual OBH732D, p. 27. For its own “Outdoor power system” row, the outdoor manual adds reconnecting the compressor connector MUZ-GL Outdoor Service Manual OBH733J, p. 46.
  • The service manuals tell the technician to turn the power off before removing the panels and the electronic control P.C. board, to discharge the capacitor before work on electric parts, and to keep clear of live parts when a circuit has to be checked with power on MUZ-GL Outdoor Service Manual OBH733J, pp. 2, 41.

Notes for different models

  • GS06–24 prints this row on p. 38 with the upper lamp; GS30/36 on p. 39 with the left lamp MSZ-GS Indoor Service Manual OBH874A, pp. 38–39.
  • The outdoor LED row for outside temperature thermistor protection is printed for MUZ-FS06/09/12, MUZ-FH06/09/12 and MUZ-GS09/12/15/18 only; the GL table gives no model limit MUZ-FS Outdoor Service Manual OBH873B, p. 31; MUZ-FH Outdoor Service Manual OBH684E, p. 35; MUZ-GS Outdoor Service Manual OBH875B, p. 65.
