“High Temperature”
What it means
The generator overheated and shut down while running Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 34. Generac’s article names blocked ventilation at the intake or exhaust, or inadequate fuel pressure, as the causes; low fuel pressure while running raises engine temperature (Generac Help Center, “What Does It Mean When My Generator Displays an Alarm: High Temp, Error Code 1400-1401?”, Apr 25, 2025). The article also lists long continuous running under heavy load, extreme outdoor temperatures and too little clearance around the unit. The units are tested to UL 2200 for an operating range of −20 °F to 122 °F (−29 °C to 50 °C) Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 9.
Check these first
- Let it cool for at least 30 minutes before any restart (1400 article).
- Inspect the ventilation around the generator, the intake, the exhaust and the rear of the unit Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 34.
- Keep at least 3 ft clear at the front and both sides of the generator, and remove leaves, debris, plants or snow from the louvers, intake and exhaust (1400 article). The manual’s schedule asks you to remove shrubs and tall grass within 3 ft (0.91 m) of the intake and discharge louvers Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 23.
- If it ran for a long time under a heavy load or in extreme heat, the 1400 article says to adjust how you use it to prevent overheating again.
- Clear the alarm for your series and restart with no load (1400 article).
- If nothing blocks the airflow, contact an IASD, Generac’s Independent Authorized Service Dealer Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 34.
The 1400 article also says a unit running continuously must be shut down every 24 hours for at least 30 minutes to cool and to check the oil, and it attributes that rule to the owner’s manual. The owner’s manuals cited here ask for a daily oil level check during long outages Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 24 but do not state the 24-hour shutdown.
When to call a licensed technician
- Nothing blocks the airflow and the alarm returns Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 34.
- Fuel pressure. Generac’s underspeed article says only qualified professionals should check it (Generac Help Center, “What Does It Mean When My Generator Displays an Alarm: Underspeed, Error Codes 1600-1603”, Oct 2, 2025).
- The air filter, which the 1400 article mentions for freezing weather and as maintenance. Generac recommends that an IASD do all maintenance Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 22.
Notes for different models
- The Next Generation manual has the same HIGH TEMPERATURE row, with a flashing red LED Next Generation 10–28 kW Owner’s Manual, p. 37. Generac’s Next Generation code table has no High Temperature number (Generac Help Center, “What Error Codes Do I Need to Call a Dealer For?”, Sep 21, 2026).
- On the PowerPact, the HIGH TEMPERATURE rows also cover a unit that will not start because the emergency shutdown switch is open PowerPact 7.5 kW Owner’s Manual, p. 29.
