Generac 1100 overcrank: engine cranks but won't start

“Overcrank”
What it means
The engine cranked but did not start. The controller runs five cranking cycles and raises the alarm if the engine has not started after them Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 20; Next Generation manual, p. 24. On 14–26 kW Guardian units and on Next Generation 10–28 kW units, the five cycles are 16 seconds of cranking and 7 of rest, twice, then three rounds of 7 seconds cranking and 7 seconds resting. The 10 kW Guardian starts with 15 seconds of cranking and 7 of rest, then four rounds of 7 and 7.
Generac’s article lists the common causes: inadequate fuel pressure, a closed fuel shutoff valve, the wrong fuel selection, the air filter, improper installation and a low battery (Generac Help Center, “What Does It Mean When My Generator Displays an Error Code: Overcrank, Code 1100-1101?”, Aug 4, 2025).
Check these first
- Check that the fuel line shutoff valve is ON Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 34; Next Generation manual, p. 37.
- On propane, check the tank level. The overcrank article says fuel pressure may be affected below 30%, and after long running in an outage it asks for a level above 35% before a restart.
- On natural gas, ask your gas supplier about supply problems in your area; the overcrank article notes that big outages and construction can affect the gas grid. If you smell gas, follow Generac’s gas leak steps.
- Keep 3 ft around the unit clear of debris, plants and snow (overcrank article). The manual’s schedule asks you to remove shrubs and tall grass within 3 ft (0.91 m) of the intake and discharge louvers Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 23.
- Clear the alarm for your series and start the unit in MANUAL Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 34. Start it with no load: the overcrank article says never to start a generator under load, and Generac’s test procedure sets the generator’s main line circuit breaker (MLCB) to OFF first (Generac Help Center, “How do I test my generator in manual mode after clearing an error?”, Jun 4, 2026).
- If it does not start, or starts and runs rough, contact an IASD, Generac’s Independent Authorized Service Dealer Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 34; Next Generation manual, p. 37.
When to call a licensed technician
- Fuel pressure. The overcrank article says it needs specialized equipment and must be checked by a professional. For reference, the manual’s troubleshooting table gives 10–12 in. water column (2.49–2.99 kPa) to the regulator for propane and 3.5–7.0 in. water column (0.87–1.74 kPa) for natural gas Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 32; Next Generation manual, p. 35.
- Fuel selection and fuel jet position on Guardian units, and the fuel setting in the Field Pro app on Next Generation units. Both are set during installation (overcrank article).
- Anything on the gas line or regulator. The manual says the fuel source must be connected by a qualified professional technician or contractor Guardian 10–26 kW manual, p. 3. The overcrank article adds that in extreme cold, a regulator not rated for those temperatures can block the fuel supply.
- A recurring overcrank. For a unit installed within the last year, the overcrank article sends you to the installer; for older units, to an IASD.
Notes for different models
Generac’s Guardian table lists Overcrank as 1100 and 1101; its Next Generation table lists 1100 only, with the Mobile Link message “The generator has experienced an overcrank alarm. Please contact a dealer.” (Generac Help Center, “What Error Codes Do I Need to Call a Dealer For?”, Sep 21, 2026). The owner’s manuals still put the fuel valve check and a MANUAL restart before that call.
