Daikin L5: output overcurrent, what to check
Daikin remote controller display
L5
“OUTPUT OVERCURRENT”
What it means
The two kinds of manual describe L5 from different sides. The FTXM-WVJU9 and FTXQ-ASBU9 owner’s charts group it with L3 and L4 and say: “The temperature inside the outdoor unit has become too high, so operation has stopped.” FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 49; FTXQ-ASBU9 Operation Manual, p. 27. The service manual describes current, not temperature: an output overcurrent is detected by checking the current in the inverter DC section, and L5 is also set by a position signal error or a speed error while the compressor runs. If L5 repeats, the system shuts down, and it resets after about 11 minutes of continuous running without any other error FTXM-W/V Service Manual SiUS042113EA, p. 138. The FTK-B/FTX-B manual gives about 5 minutes FTK-B/FTX-B Service Manual DAMA-SM-23-006, p. 87. The service table marks L5 “Displayed only when system-down occurs” FTXM-W/V Service Manual SiUS042113EA, p. 96.
Check these first
- Check that the OPERATION lamp blinks at about 0.5-second intervals and read the code, as described in the Daikin code guide FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 49.
- On FTXM-WVJU9 and FTXQ-ASBU9 units, the chart line for L3, L4 and L5 reads: “Is there anything blocking the air outlet of the outdoor unit? After turning off the circuit breaker, remove the obstruction, then turn the power on again and operate.” FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 49; FTXQ-ASBU9 Operation Manual, p. 27.
- Keep the area around the outdoor unit clear. The manual says obstacles close to the outdoor unit may lower its performance, and not to let leaves and other debris build up around it FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 4.
- Keep your hands out of the unit. The same manuals say not to put a finger or other objects into the air inlet or outlet, because the fan rotates at high speed, and never to remove the fan guard FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 3; FTXQ-ASBU9 Operation Manual, p. 3.
- After the power is back on, watch the lamp. If it stays lit after the unit has run for a while, keep using it. If it blinks again, turn off the circuit breaker and call your dealer FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 50; FTXQ-ASBU9 Operation Manual, p. 28.
The FTX/FTXN-NMVJU and FTXS30/36 manuals give L5 no step of its own. Their general step for a blinking lamp also covers obstructions at the indoor and outdoor units, followed by a restart and a call to your dealer or service shop if the lamp still blinks FTX/FTXN-NMVJU Operation Manual, p. 27; FTXS30/36 Operation Manual, p. 34.
When to call a licensed technician
The FTXM-W/V service manual lists these causes for L5 FTXM-W/V Service Manual SiUS042113EA, p. 138:
- poor installation condition, or a closed stop valve;
- a defective power module, wrong internal wiring, or a defective outdoor unit PCB;
- abnormal power supply voltage, or supply voltage out of specification;
- a defective compressor.
The AXVJU manual adds a poor connection between the main board and the IPM board AXVJU Service Manual SM-5WM-Y-NA-B1, p. 56. These are checks on the inverter, the compressor and the power supply. The service manual warns that working on equipment connected to power may cause an electric shock and that the outdoor unit’s step-up capacitor must be discharged before repair work FTXM-W/V Service Manual SiUS042113EA, pp. 2–3, and the owner’s manual says not to do electrical work unless you are licensed to do so FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 4.
Notes for different models
- FTX/FTK-BXVJU and the remote manuals call L5 “IPM error / IGBT error” FTX/FTK-BXVJU Operation Manual, p. 1, section 9; BRC52B Remote Controller Manual, p. 1-4; BRC51D61 Wired Remote Controller Manual, p. 12. The AXVJU manual says “IPM ABNORMALITY”, and the FTX-W and FTXS-L service tables “Output overcurrent detection” AXVJU Service Manual SM-5WM-Y-NA-B1, p. 34; FTX-W Service Manual SiUS042228E, p. 68; FTXS-L Service Manual SiUS091133, p. 94.
- The FTX/FTK-BXVJU poster has no chart by code; it says to call your local dealer or serviceman if the fault persists FTX/FTK-BXVJU Operation Manual, p. 1, section 10.
