Daikin E7: outdoor fan stopped, what to check

E7
“DC FAN MOTOR FAULT”
What it means
The FTXM-WVJU9 and FTXQ-ASBU9 manuals explain E7 in one line: “The fan of the outdoor unit is stopped.” FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 49; FTXQ-ASBU9 Operation Manual, p. 27. In the service manual, a Hall IC reads the speed of the outdoor fan motor, and E7 is set when the fan does not start within 15 to 30 seconds even though the fan motor is running. If E7 repeats, the system shuts down, and it resets after about 11 minutes of continuous running without any other error FTXM-W/V Service Manual SiUS042113EA, p. 117. The FTK-B/FTX-B manual gives 30 to 60 seconds, depending on the model FTK-B/FTX-B Service Manual DAMA-SM-23-006, p. 75. The service table marks E7 “Displayed only when system-down occurs” FTXM-W/V Service Manual SiUS042113EA, p. 96.
The opposite case, a fan that runs when you did not expect it, is explained in the same manuals: the outdoor fan keeps turning for about 1 minute after the unit stops, to protect the system, and when the outdoor temperature is high it may start while the unit is off FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 46; FTXQ-ASBU9 Operation Manual, p. 24.
Check these first
E7 is one of the few codes for which the FTXM-WVJU9 and FTXQ-ASBU9 owner’s manuals give a specific check:
- Check that the OPERATION lamp blinks at about 0.5-second intervals and read the code, as described in the Daikin code guide FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 49.
- Keep the area around the outdoor unit clear. The manual says not to place objects close to it or let leaves and other debris build up around it: leaves are a hotbed for small animals that can enter the unit and cause malfunctions, smoke or fire when they touch electrical parts FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 4.
- The E7 line of the chart reads: “Is there any foreign matter inside the outdoor unit? After turning off the circuit breaker, remove the foreign matter, then turn the power on again and operate.” FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 49; FTXQ-ASBU9 Operation Manual, p. 27.
- The same manuals also say: “Never remove the fan guard of the unit. A fan rotating at high speed without the fan guard is very dangerous.” They say not to put a finger or other objects into the air inlet or outlet, because the fan rotates at high speed, and never to inspect or service the unit yourself FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 3; FTXQ-ASBU9 Operation Manual, p. 3. The manual does not say how to reach foreign matter inside the outdoor unit, and this page does not either. Repair and maintenance go to your dealer FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 3.
- After the power is back on, watch the lamp. If it stays lit after the unit has run for a while, keep using it. If it blinks again, turn off the circuit breaker and call your dealer FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 50; FTXQ-ASBU9 Operation Manual, p. 28.
The FTX/FTXN-NMVJU and FTXS30/36 manuals list E7 but give it no step of its own. Their general step for a blinking lamp is to turn off the breaker, remove anything blocking the air inlet or outlet of the indoor or outdoor unit, restart, and call your dealer or service shop if the lamp still blinks FTX/FTXN-NMVJU Operation Manual, p. 27; FTXS30/36 Operation Manual, p. 34.
When to call a licensed technician
The FTXM-W/V service manual lists these causes for E7: the fan motor disconnected, foreign matter stuck in the fan, a defective fan motor, and a defective outdoor unit PCB FTXM-W/V Service Manual SiUS042113EA, p. 117. The AXVJU manual adds a harness or connector between the fan motor and the PCB that is disconnected or in poor contact AXVJU Service Manual SM-5WM-Y-NA-B1, p. 43.
The service manual calls this a high-voltage fan motor FTXM-W/V Service Manual SiUS042113EA, p. 117. It warns that working on equipment connected to power may cause an electric shock and that the outdoor unit’s step-up capacitor must be discharged before repair work FTXM-W/V Service Manual SiUS042113EA, pp. 2–3. Checking the motor, its wiring and the PCB is technician work.
Notes for different models
- FTX/FTK-BXVJU and the remote manuals call E7 “Outdoor DC fan motor lock” FTX/FTK-BXVJU Operation Manual, p. 1, section 9; BRC52B Remote Controller Manual, p. 1-3; BRC51D61 Wired Remote Controller Manual, p. 11. The FTX-W and FTXS-L service tables call it “DC fan lock”, and the AXVJU manual “OUTDOOR FAN MOTOR LOCK” FTX-W Service Manual SiUS042228E, p. 68; FTXS-L Service Manual SiUS091133, p. 94; AXVJU Service Manual SM-5WM-Y-NA-B1, p. 34.
- The indoor fan has its own code, A6 FTXM-WVJU9 Operation Manual, p. 50.
