Rheem and Ruud furnace code 61: blower fault, blower unable to run
Furnace control display or LED
61
“BLOWER FAULT – BLOWER UNABLE TO RUN”
What it means
61 says the circulating blower cannot run. The fault card describes a blower that has failed critically, or a critical motor fault, such as a thermal limit trip, that keeps the blower motor from running. The furnace does not operate in any mode 95P: 92-24161-111-17, p. 94; 96P: 92-24161-122-12, p. 98; 96V: 92-24161-124-12, p. 119.
If 61 appears during heating, the blower stops at once and the furnace shuts down normally with a post-purge. After that nothing runs, thermostat calls included, until the fault clears. The card says 61 can appear in heating or cooling 92-24161-111-17, p. 94.
The control can also set 61 itself, through the main limit. When the main limit has been open for more than 150 seconds (2 min 30 s), the control declares the blower dead and gas heating stops 801T: 92-24161-144-09, p. 40. What the display shows then 92-24161-144-09, p. 39:
- While the limit is still open during the call for heat, 61 and 22 alternate until the limit closes again.
- The control enters a one-hour lockout, and 61 and 10 alternate.
- This can happen up to four times in one call for heat. The fourth time, the control enters a hard lockout with 61.
The 801T manual says this hard lockout can be reset by cycling the call for heat 92-24161-144-09, p. 40. The fault card says the control then requires repair of the blower or motor and a manual reset of power to the furnace 92-24161-111-17, p. 94. Neither is an owner step; the owner’s manuals have no reset (92-20802-128-03; 92-20802-130-02).
The card lists six causes: the motor has tripped on its thermal limit because of a restriction or bearing failure; the motor’s power factor correction (PFC) choke is faulty; the furnace model data is faulty or corrupted; the wiring to the motor or the choke is damaged; the blower wheel is damaged or not properly attached to the motor shaft; the motor has failed catastrophically 92-24161-111-17, p. 94; 92-24161-124-12, p. 119.
Check these first
Rheem’s owner’s manuals have no code list. For a furnace that will not operate, the last of their operating instructions gives two steps 92-20802-128-03, p. 4; 92-20802-130-02, p. 4:
- Turn off the gas to the furnace by “To Turn Off Gas To The Appliance”: shut off the manual gas valve in the gas supply piping outside the furnace casing, set the thermostat to its lowest setting, turn off all electric power to the appliance if service is to be performed, remove the burner access door, turn the gas control knob or switch to OFF and replace the door 92-20802-128-03, p. 4. In that list the power step is conditional, but the manual’s warning is to turn off electrical power to the furnace before removing the front access door 92-20802-128-03, p. 7, and its operating instructions turn off all electric power before the burner access door is removed 92-20802-128-03, p. 4. Full steps: shutting the furnace down.
- Call your service technician or gas supplier 92-20802-128-03, p. 4.
Bearing failure is one of the causes. The owner’s manuals say the blower motor and the induced draft motor are lubricated by the manufacturer and need no further attention, and tell you not to try to lubricate their bearings 92-20802-128-03, p. 7; 92-20802-130-02, p. 7. On the same page they leave inspecting and cleaning the blower compartment and motor to a qualified installer, service agency or the gas supplier, and they note that dirty filters can restrict airflow, which the motor needs to keep from overheating. Filter care is the owner’s task in these manuals 92-20802-128-03, p. 7; the card does not name the filter as a cause of 61.
When to call a licensed technician
The card’s solutions are all service work 92-24161-111-17, p. 94; 92-24161-124-12, p. 119:
- Removing the obstruction, or replacing the motor.
- Replacing the power factor correction choke.
- Replacing the furnace memory card with the correct replacement part “from ProStock”, as the card puts it.
- Inspecting and repairing the wiring and connectors to the motor and the choke.
- Replacing the blower wheel, or attaching it properly to the motor shaft.
- Replacing the motor.
If 61 came after the main limit was open, the causes of the open limit are on the 22 page. The owner’s manuals leave routine maintenance to a qualified installer, service agency or the gas supplier 92-20802-128-03, p. 7.

On the communicating furnaces the milder blower code is 60, “BLOWER FAULT - BLOWER CAN STILL RUN”: the blower keeps running at less than optimal conditions and everything else continues as normal 92-24161-124-12, p. 119. The 801 and 802P manuals have no fault cards for 61; their lists, legends and lockout rules are the source there 92-24161-144-09, pp. 39–40. The 801T Ultra Low NOx and 98V card text could not be extracted, so this page does not paraphrase it.
For Ruud, the documents show only the replacement-parts line “www.myrheem.com/myruud.com” in the 802P manuals 92-24161-146-05, p. 50; 92-24161-147-04, p. 46 and the model name R801T on both a Ruud and a Rheem specification sheet (G22-556 Rev 8; G11-662 Rev 7); none ties a Ruud furnace to a series on this page.
