Indoor lamp, table 9-4: 14 or more blinks, then 2.5 seconds off; the GS30/36 table prints “14-time blink” (MSZ-GS Indoor Service Manual OBH874A, p. 39). Indoor and outdoor units do not operate. GL and FH: “An abnormality other than above mentioned is detected.” FS adds the indoor, defrost or ambient temperature thermistors; GS adds the indoor or ambient temperature thermistors; in table 9-4 of these two manuals the row also says not to start the unit again without repair (MSZ-FS Indoor Service Manual OBH872A, p. 24; MSZ-GS Indoor Service Manual OBH874A, pp. 38–39).

What it means

The indoor lamp table 9-4 shows most codes as a number of blinks followed by a 2.5-second off period. When the count is 14 or more, the table calls it “Other abnormality”: a fault that is not one of the rows above it MSZ-GL Indoor Service Manual OBH732D, p. 27; MSZ-FH Indoor Service Manual OBH683E, p. 24. The indoor and outdoor units do not operate. The tables have no rows above 14, so a count of 15, 16 or 17 on the indoor lamp of a GL, FS, FH or GS06–24 unit falls in this row.

FS and GS name more causes. The FS table adds an abnormality of the indoor thermistors, the defrost thermistor or the ambient temperature thermistor MSZ-FS Indoor Service Manual OBH872A, p. 24. The GS table adds the indoor thermistors or the ambient temperature thermistor, and for GS30/36 it prints “14-time blink” without “or more” MSZ-GS Indoor Service Manual OBH874A, pp. 38–39.

Where 14 to 17 means something else:

  • In failure mode recall, a technician’s procedure, the outdoor table uses 14 blinks of the indoor lamp for a closed stop valve or a 4-way valve and pipe temperature fault, and 16 blinks for an outdoor refrigerant system abnormality on GL, FS and GS MUZ-GL Outdoor Service Manual OBH733J, p. 45; MUZ-FS Outdoor Service Manual OBH873B, p. 29; MUZ-GS Outdoor Service Manual OBH875B, p. 63. On FH, all three show as 14 blinks or more MUZ-FH Outdoor Service Manual OBH684E, p. 33.
  • On the outdoor board LED, 11, 16 and 17 blinks stand for the stop valve, the 4-way valve and the refrigerant system MUZ-GL Outdoor Service Manual OBH733J, p. 46.
  • On P-Series PKA-A and PLA-A units, 14 beeps and blinks in self-check mean PL, “Abnormal refrigerant circuit” PKA-A24/30/36KA8 Service Manual TCH115A, p. 12.

Check these first

  1. Stop the unit with the remote and consult your dealer. The owner’s manuals list a blinking operation indicator lamp as a reason to stop using the unit MSZ-GL Operating Instructions, p. En-11; MSZ-FS Operating Instructions, p. En-13; MSZ-FH Operating Instructions, p. En-12; MSZ-GS06/09/12/15 Operating Instructions, p. En-13.
  2. Do not switch the breaker off and on while the unit runs; the owner’s manuals warn of sparks and fire. Switch it off with the remote first MSZ-GL Operating Instructions, p. En-1.
  3. Tell the dealer if the unit stopped cooling or heating. The owner’s manuals say this can mean a refrigerant leak, and that leaking refrigerant in contact with a heat source such as a fan heater, kerosene heater or cooking stove creates a harmful gas MSZ-GL Operating Instructions, p. En-1.

When to call a licensed technician

  • GL, FS, FH and GS06–24: the table’s remedy is to check the stop valve and the 4-way valve and to look at the fault in detail with the outdoor unit’s failure mode recall MSZ-GL Indoor Service Manual OBH732D, p. 27; MSZ-GS Indoor Service Manual OBH874A, p. 38. GS30/36 lists only the recall and the thermistor checks MSZ-GS Indoor Service Manual OBH874A, p. 39.
  • The FS and GS manuals add to this row “Do not start the operation again without repair to prevent hazards.” A footnote on the same pages warns that air mixed into the refrigerant circuit may cause a “diesel explosion” MSZ-FS Indoor Service Manual OBH872A, pp. 23–24; MSZ-GS Indoor Service Manual OBH874A, pp. 38–39. All four outdoor manuals, GL and FH included, print “Do not start the operation again to prevent hazards.” in their check of the outdoor refrigerant circuit MUZ-GL Outdoor Service Manual OBH733J, p. 59; MUZ-FS Outdoor Service Manual OBH873B, p. 42; MUZ-FH Outdoor Service Manual OBH684E, p. 46; MUZ-GS Outdoor Service Manual OBH875B, p. 79.
  • FS and GS: the thermistor characteristics are checked against the test point diagram and voltages in the service manuals MSZ-FS Indoor Service Manual OBH872A, p. 24. The service manuals warn to keep clear of live parts when a circuit must be checked with power on, and to discharge the capacitor before work on electric parts MSZ-GL Indoor Service Manual OBH732D, p. 2.
  • Valve work: the service manuals warn that when a valve is opened or closed below freezing temperatures, refrigerant may spurt out and cause injuries MUZ-GL Outdoor Service Manual OBH733J, p. 2. Refrigerant work is for a technician certified under EPA Section 608.

Notes for different models

  • GL and FH: the condition is a single line, “An abnormality other than above mentioned is detected.” MSZ-GL Indoor Service Manual OBH732D, p. 27; MSZ-FH Indoor Service Manual OBH683E, p. 24.
  • GS30/36: “14-time blink”, left lamp; the remedy leaves out the stop valve and 4-way valve checks MSZ-GS Indoor Service Manual OBH874A, p. 39.
  • Table 10-3 does not say which indoor lamp pattern goes with the stop valve, 4-way valve or refrigerant system LED counts. For the refrigerant system code, see the LED 17 page.
