What it means

On Goodman and Amana furnaces with a single diagnostic LED, six flashes between pauses mean the rollout limit is open. Some tables put a blown control board fuse under the same count. The tables word it three ways:

  • “Rollout limit open.” together with “Integrated control module fuse is blown.” in the 2022 GMES9 and GMES80 instructions and the GMSS9, GMS8, GMH8, GMH95, GME95 and GME8 documents IOG-2020J, p. 41; IOG-2021H, p. 30; IOG-2009Q, p. 43; RS6612006R7, p. 46; RS6612007R4, p. 42; RS6612003R2, p. 55; RS6612005R1, p. 50; RS6621001R2, p. 36.
  • “Rollout limit circuit is open.” in the 2019 GMES80 and 2014 GMSS9 service manuals and the GKS9 and GMS8 manuals RS6621003, p. 37; RS6612012, p. 43; RS6612004R2, p. 50; RS6612006R7, p. 44.
  • “Rollout limit circuit is open/Control board fuse open.” in the 2019 GMES9 and 2017 GMSS9 service manuals RS6612016, p. 44; RS6612012R8, p. 45.

The first cause in the tables is flame rollout. The GMSS9 table goes on with misaligned burners, a blocked flue or air inlet pipe, a failed induced draft blower, loose or improperly connected wiring, a faulty rollout limit, a short in the thermostat wiring and the control board fuse; the circulator blower runs continuously and the furnace does not heat RS6612012R8, p. 45. The GMES9 table has a shorter list, with a short in the 24 volt AC control or safety circuits in place of the thermostat wiring and fuse items IOG-2020J, p. 41.

On three-color boards six flashes mean something else (see the notes below).

Check these first

The owner’s manual gives no step for this code and none for a rollout limit. Its instruction for a flashing LED HIG-2002A, p. 8:

  1. Count the flashes between pauses through the blower compartment sight glass and write the number down HIG-2002A, p. 8. If your LED flashes red, amber or green, use the notes below instead.
  2. Shut the furnace down: thermostat to its lowest setting (the control closes the gas valve and the blowers stop after a delay), remove the burner compartment door, move the gas valve’s ON/OFF switch to OFF, close the external manual gas shut-off valve and put the door back HIG-2002A, p. 6. Before the gas control goes to OFF, the start-up steps and the label also turn off the electrical power to the furnace; the label says to do so if service is to be performed HIG-2002A, pp. 6, 9. Move the gas control by hand only, never with tools; if it will not move, call a qualified service technician HIG-2002A, p. 9. Full steps: shutting the furnace down.
  3. Contact a qualified servicer HIG-2002A, p. 8.

The manual asks you not to go further: “Do not attempt repairs yourself” HIG-2002A, p. 8, and “do not remove any internal compartment covers” HIG-2002A, p. 6. If the furnace overheats or the gas supply does not shut off, it says to turn off the manual gas shutoff valve outside the furnace before turning off the electrical supply HIG-2002A, p. 2.

When to call a licensed technician

The corrective actions in the GMSS9 and GMES9 tables RS6612012R8, p. 45; IOG-2020J, p. 41:

  • Checking the burners for proper alignment.
  • Checking the flue and air inlet piping for blockage, proper length, elbows and termination.
  • Checking the rollout limit and replacing it if needed.
  • Checking the induced draft blower’s performance and replacing it if needed.
  • Tightening or correcting wiring connections.
  • Replacing the control board fuse; the GMES9 table specifies a 3A automotive fuse and points to the manual’s electrostatic discharge precautions IOG-2020J, p. 41.

The tables say to turn power OFF before any repair RS6612012R8, p. 45.

Notes for different models

Board or series Code Meaning in the table Source
Single LED (series listed at the top of this page) 6 flashes Rollout limit open, with or without the control fuse (three wordings above) IOG-2020J, p. 41; RS6612012R8, p. 45
GMEC96, GMEC80 Red 6 flashes “Pressure switch cycling lockout, pressure switch has opened 5 times in the same heating cycle” IOG-2011U, p. 55 (GMEC96); RS6621005R1, p. 29 (GMEC80)
GMEC96, GMEC80 Red 5 flashes “Limit & rollout circuit open for 15 minutes. Open control board fuse or rollout switch” IOG-2011U, p. 55 (GMEC96); RS6621005R1, p. 29 (GMEC80)
MES96U, GMES80*U, 2019 manuals Red 6 flashes “Burner temperature limit switch open.” RS6612017, p. 21; RS6621006, p. 17
Three-character display E11 “Open rollout switch.” IOG-2037D, p. 44
Three-character display, Ultra-Low NOx boards E11 “Open burner box limit switch circuit.” IOG-2040D, p. 39
ComfortNet alarm tables E11 “Rollout Switch Open” RS6612014R3, p. 56
Older ComfortNet two-character boards E3 (thermostat: HIGH LIMIT OPEN) “Primary limit or auxiliary limit circuit is open. Rollout limit circuit is open.” RS6612010R6, p. 48

On GMEC96 and GMEC80 boards red 6 flashes is a lockout, not a rollout code. The table’s check list is an excessive venting restriction or leaking pressure switch tubing GMEC96: IOG-2011U, p. 55; GMEC80: RS6621005R1, p. 29. Because its wording says lockout, the owner’s manual reset applies to that code: see clearing a code.

The MES96U and GMES80*U rows above come from the 2019 service manuals. The 02/2022 installation instructions for these series have their own flash tables, worded differently IOG-2013F, pp. 33–34; IOG-2019G, pp. 26–27.

For E11 on the current GR9S96 boards, the table lists gas pressure too high, misaligned burners and a restricted heat exchanger or venting IOG-2037D, p. 44.
