What it means

On Goodman and Amana furnaces with a single diagnostic LED, two flashes between pauses mean the control sees the pressure switch circuit closed while the induced draft blower is not operating. The furnace fails to operate IOG-2020J, p. 40; RS6612012R8, p. 44. On boards with a three-character display a similarly worded code is EE1, “Pressure switch circuit is closed at start of heating cycle” IOG-2029D, p. 39.

The GMES9 and GMSS9 tables give two causes: the induced draft blower pressure switch contacts are sticking, or there is a short in the pressure switch circuit IOG-2020J, p. 40; RS6612012R8, p. 44.

On three-color boards two flashes mean something else, and on GMEC96 and GMEC80 boards two amber flashes are normal operation (see the notes below).

Check these first

The owner’s manual gives no step for this code, and none of the causes in the tables is something it leaves to the owner. Its instruction for a flashing LED HIG-2002A, p. 8:

  1. Count the flashes between pauses through the blower compartment sight glass and write the number down HIG-2002A, p. 8. If your LED flashes red, amber or green, use the notes below instead.
  2. Shut the furnace down: thermostat to its lowest setting (the control closes the gas valve and the blowers stop after a delay), remove the burner compartment door, move the gas valve’s ON/OFF switch to OFF, close the external manual gas shut-off valve and put the door back HIG-2002A, p. 6. Before the gas control goes to OFF, the start-up steps and the label also turn off the electrical power to the furnace; the label says to do so if service is to be performed HIG-2002A, pp. 6, 9. Move the gas control by hand only, never with tools; if it will not move, call a qualified service technician HIG-2002A, p. 9. Full steps: shutting the furnace down.
  3. Contact a qualified servicer HIG-2002A, p. 8.

The manual asks you not to go further: “Do not attempt repairs yourself” HIG-2002A, p. 8, and “do not remove any internal compartment covers” HIG-2002A, p. 6. The rest of its checklist (thermostat, circuit breakers and fuses, filters, grilles, intake and vent terminations, in that order) is for a furnace whose LED is not flashing HIG-2002A, p. 8.

When to call a licensed technician

  • Replacing the induced draft blower pressure switch with the proper replacement part IOG-2020J, p. 40; RS6612012R8, p. 44.
  • Finding and repairing a short in the pressure switch circuit IOG-2020J, p. 40; RS6612012R8, p. 44.
  • On GMEC96 and GMEC80 boards with red 2 flashes, the table’s check list is a faulty pressure switch, shorted pressure switch wires, or a control board inducer relay stuck closed GMEC96: IOG-2011U, p. 54; GMEC80: RS6621005R1, p. 28.

The GMES9 and GMSS9 tables say to turn power OFF before any repair IOG-2020J, p. 40; RS6612012R8, p. 44.

Older ComfortNet two-character boards E1 (thermostat: PS1 CLOSED) “Low stage pressure switch circuit is closed at start of heating cycle.” RS6612010R6, p. 47

The GMEC96 and GMEC80 tables add “possible inducer operation” to the symptom of red 2 flashes GMEC96: IOG-2011U, p. 54; GMEC80: RS6621005R1, p. 28. On older ComfortNet boards E2 is a different fault, “Low stage pressure switch circuit is not closed.” RS6612010R6, p. 48; a pressure switch circuit that is not closed is 3 flashes on single-LED boards.
