What it means

Code 23 is two short flashes followed by three long ones. Most labels call it “PRESSURE SWITCH DID NOT OPEN” and give two checks: obstructed pressure tubing and a pressure switch stuck closed 58SC0A-05SI, p. 26. The 3-digit tables word it as a stuck-closed switch: “PS stuck closed” on the 58SP0B, “Stuck Main pressure switch” on the Bryant 800SB, and “LPS stuck closed” or “HPS stuck closed” on the two-stage 59TP6C, 59TP7A, Bryant 926TC and Payne PG96VTAB 58SP0B-01SI, p. 30; II800SB-01, p. 31; 59TP6C-01SI, p. 56; IM-PG96VTAB-01, p. 54.

The ultra low NOx 59SU5A, Bryant 935SA and 59CU5A read pressure with a transducer, and there 23 means “PRESSURE > 0.15” w.c. AT START-UP”, with checks for an obstruction in the pressure tubing or the transducer vent holes, a defective transducer and the transducer wiring 59SU5A-05SI, p. 51; 59CU5A-01SI, p. 65. The Payne PG80ESU guide prints it as “PRESSURE > 0.15-in. w.c. AT START-UP” GFULN80-G-01TS, p. 6.

Check these first

Nothing on the 23 label is in the owner’s checklist, and the owner’s manuals do not mention code 23. The manual’s general steps:

  1. Write the code down before you turn off the power or remove the blower access door OM9GFRC-02, p. 10. Carrier’s 80% owner’s manual does not mention the LED. How to count the flashes: reading a Carrier code.
  2. Check that the thermostat is set above room temperature and to HEAT mode OM9GFRC-02, p. 11.
  3. Check the fuses and circuit breakers, and that the electrical power supply switch is on OM9GFRC-02, p. 11. Carrier’s 80% manual also asks whether the blower access door is firmly in place 80GSFRN-C-03OM, p. 7.
  4. If the furnace still fails to operate, call your service representative OM9GFRC-02, p. 11.

When to call a licensed technician

  • The pressure tubing and the pressure switch 58SC0A-05SI, p. 26.
  • On transducer models, the transducer, its vent holes and its wiring 59SU5A-05SI, p. 51; 59CU5A-01SI, p. 65; GFULN80-G-01TS, p. 6.
  • These parts are inside the furnace. The owner’s manual lets untrained people clean and replace air filters and says all other operations must be performed by trained service personnel OM9GFRC-02, p. 2.

Notes for different models

  • On the Bryant 935SB display, 23.3 reads “Pressure detected over 0.15””; the rest of that line gives sensor voltages for the technician II935SB-01, p. 48.
  • The 58SU0A has no code 23. Its pressure sensor faults are 2 red flashes, “Pressure Sensor Null Error”, an inconsistent reading with the inducer off, and 3 red flashes, “Pressure Sensor Span Error”, an inconsistent reading with the inducer on 58SU0A-05SI, p. 36.
  • The Infinity zone control lists furnace code 23 as “Pressure Switch Did Not Open” UIZ01-07SI, p. 20.
