Owner checks, then technician

What it means

Code 14 is one short flash followed by four long ones. Every two-digit label calls it “IGNITION LOCKOUT”: the control will auto-reset after three hours, and the label sends you to code 34 for the causes 59SC5A-13SI, p. 67. Code 34 is a failed attempt to prove flame; 14 is the lockout after the last attempt 59SC5A-13SI, p. 67.

The documents count the attempts in different words but all come to four. Carrier’s owner’s manual for condensing furnaces says the control locks out if the main burners fail to ignite after four attempts OM9GFRC-02, p. 6; its 80% manual describes three more ignition cycles after the burners first fail to ignite 80GSFRN-C-03OM, p. 5. On the 59TP6C, if the flame is not proved within two seconds, the control closes the gas valve and repeats the ignition sequence for up to three more trials before ignition lockout 59TP6C-01SI, p. 71.

Check these first

The owner’s manual has a direct instruction for this case: “If lockout occurs, main burners fail to light, or blower does not come on, shut down the furnace and call your dealer for service.” OM9GFRC-02, p. 6. Carrier’s 80% manual gives the same instruction if lockout occurs or the blower does not come on 80GSFRN-C-03OM, p. 5. Separately, the 34 label lists a closed manual valve and a gas valve that is turned off among the causes 59SC5A-13SI, p. 67, and the owner’s checklist for a furnace that fails to operate lets you check both:

  1. Write the code down before you turn off the power or remove the blower access door OM9GFRC-02, p. 10. Carrier’s 80% owner’s manual does not mention the LED. How to count the flashes: reading a Carrier code.
  2. Check that the manual shut-off valve in the gas supply pipe leading to the furnace is open OM9GFRC-02, p. 11. Carrier’s 80% manual explains the handle: it is open when the lever points the same way as the pipe and closed when it is at a right angle to the pipe 80GSFRN-C-03OM, p. 7.
  3. Check that the control switch on the gas valve is in the ON position. The switch is behind the furnace door: first turn off the electrical power supply to the furnace and install a lockout tag before removing the access doors OM9GFRC-02, pp. 10–11; Carrier’s 80% manual says to turn off the electrical power supply and remove the access door before this check 80GSFRN-C-03OM, p. 7. If you must reset the switch to ON, the manual says to follow the start-up procedure OM9GFRC-02, p. 11. That procedure has you set the switch to OFF, wait five minutes and smell for gas, including near the floor, and stop if you smell gas, before you set it to ON OM9GFRC-02, pp. 4–6.
  4. In the 80% manual, if either check shows an interruption in the gas supply, make sure the gas has not been shut off for safety reasons; if nothing else seems to be wrong, follow the start-up procedures on pages 3 and 4 of that booklet 80GSFRN-C-03OM, p. 7.
  5. Never try to light the burners with a match or other source of flame OM9GFRC-02, p. 4; 80GSFRN-C-03OM, p. 3.
  6. If the valve was open and the switch was on, follow the lockout instruction: shut down the furnace and call your dealer OM9GFRC-02, p. 6.

When to call a licensed technician

  • The lockout comes back, or the main burners still fail to light OM9GFRC-02, p. 6.
  • The other causes on the 34 label: oxide on the flame sensor, the flame sense current, control ground continuity and the green/yellow wire to the furnace sheet metal, a grounded flame sensor, a defective hot surface igniter, a defective gas valve, low inlet gas pressure, and inadequate flame carryover or rough ignition 59SC5A-13SI, p. 67.   • The owner’s manual lets untrained people clean and replace air filters and says all other operations must be performed by trained service personnel OM9GFRC-02, p. 2.

  • Labels word the retries differently: “three more times” on most, “four ignition trials” on the Bryant 820SA and the 58TP0A, and “ignition four times” on the 59SU5A, Bryant 935SA, 59CU5A and Payne PG80ESU 59SC5A-13SI, p. 67; II820SA-02, p. 26; 58TP0A-02SI, p. 37; 59SU5A-05SI, p. 51; GFULN80-G-01TS, p. 6.
  • Boards with a 3-digit display split the lockout: 14.1, “Ignition Lockout after 4 consecutive ignition tries”; 14.2, “Flame lost 3 times after 70s of heating”; 14.3, “Lockout - 7 loss of flame events during a heat request” 59TP6C-01SI, p. 56; IM-PG96VTAB-01, p. 54; 58SP0B-01SI, p. 30; II800SB-01, p. 31. On the 59TP6C, 59TP7A, Bryant 926TC and Payne PG96VTAB, 14.4 is “Lockout - 7 LPS open events during a heat request”, a pressure switch lockout; see code 32 59TP6C-01SI, p. 56; IM-PG96VTAB-01, p. 54.
  • On the Bryant 935SB, 14.3 adds “or three 34.4 faults during heat request”, and 14.4 is “Lockout – 7 loss of pressure events during a heat request” II935SB-01, p. 48.
  • The 58SU0A has no code 14. Its 1 red flash is “System Lockout: Retries Exceeded, 1 Hour Fixed”, and its checks start with no gas or the gas valve OFF 58SU0A-05SI, p. 36.
  • The Infinity zone control lists furnace code 14; for 14 the system heats only with the heat pump, if there is one, until the code clears UIZ01-07SI, p. 20.
